Dear Sirs— Captain Carter, of the Gainsborough, being confident that his ship is perfectly seaworthy, intends leaving for Wellington either to-night or to-morrow morning. We may here mention that both a topmast and bowsprit have been rigged, so that the damage has already been practically repaired. And the captain wishes us to point out and place on record the delay which has occurred in the making of any complaint as to the Beaworthiness of his ship. We are, &c, SCLANDERg & Co., Agents N. Z. Sib, — As we have received information that it would not be safe for you to take your ship in its present state through Cook' 3 Straits, we have instructed Captain Levy, Marine Surveyor to this Agency, and Captain Gastcr, of the Celestial Queen, to hold a survey, and report to us as to the seaworthiness of your ship. In the meantime, we hereby protest against your proceeding to sea until the Surveyors' report has been handed to us, the purport of which we will communicate to you at the earliest possible moment. Captain Caiitkk, Ship Gaiusborough, Sir,— We have now receircd a report from the Surveyors we directed to hold a survey on your ship, in which they report her seaworthy for the passage to Wellington. We have, therefore, much pleasure iv withdrawing tho protest we forwarded to you yesterday. Captain Gaster informs us that he furnished you with a copy of the report. The cost of editing and publishing the New Zealand Times for the year just ended ; were £ 14,664 11s. It is rumored that Mr Harper is about to ' resign his seat in the Assembly for Cheviot. A telegram from Tokomairiro, dated February 25, says:— A daughter of a settler residiugnearMiltouhas recently disappeared, and no clue at present can be found as to her whereabouts. The police are making diligent i inquiries, but whether the girl has eloped, or ' been abducted, or met with foul play is at present a mystery. Her age is between sixteen and 17. Her parents and friends are in a state of considerable anxiety. She ha 3 been missing some four or five days,
