NELSON INSTITUTE.
To thb Editor op thk 'Evening Mail. 1 Sir— [ln my former letter, two lines from the bottom, for "profit" read «•. progress."] My reason for writing yesterday was to show that the Committee wished to make public their report, and that the obstacle lay with your paper, a statement which you fully confirm, and thus my object is attained. The words in which you refer to the " gratuitous advertisements " which tha Nelson press has given in the shape of " the many letters and paragraphs emanating from the Librarian relative to missing books, &c.," will naturally convey to the unsuspicious reader the impression that such notifications have been numerous, and that the Institute has been at no expense for such objects. On the contrary, advertisements about missing books, &c, have been regularly charged, and paid for, and any other references to the subject not charged for have been very few. As it is the custom of the press to give " locals " to theatrical entertainments, public companies, and other purely commercial undertakings I fail to see adequate grounds for the complacency with which you refer to the same and no more being done for the Institute as " most liberal." I am, &c, F. W. Ibvine. Nelson, March 6, 1878. [We can only repeat that the report of the Institute has not appeared in our columns because the Committee have elected to depart from the usual conditions. Whether the advertisements that we have gratuitously inserted are many or few is not a question worth disputing. Indeed, under the circumstances, it would be difficult to attach a distinct meaning to the words " many " and " few."— Ed. N.E.M .]
