Butler, who fired at the guard iv the South train on Saturday week, was brought up under the Lunatics Act fitter he had been examiued by a number of medical gentlemen, who pronounced him insane, lie was very violent while in the precincts of the Court, aud on medical certificate he was committed to the Lunatic Asylum as a dangerous lunatic. Information has been received by the police that for some time before leaving invercargill Butler was in the habit of carrying a gun with him wherever he went, aud altogether his conduct had been very eccentric for some time past. A pigeon race between Ashburton and Christchurch, 50 miles, for youug birds, was won by Earuahaw's Luna iv oue hour aud forty minutes. Matson and Co. celebrated the opening of the Corn Exchange and weekly grain sales on Saturday by a free bauquet, which was a great succe:3s. One hundred persons were present. . Auckland, Monday. At a test of the City Waterworks pumping machinery, 1000 gallons were raised 230 feet with 2\ lbs coal. Mr Cecil Jackson, late surgeon of the Inverca'gill Hospital, .was brought up on remand, charged uiih procuring abortion. The case occupied all day aud has not yet concluded. The evideuce of several medical men examined is very much against the accused. Blui'p, Tuesday. The Arawata brings 10 tons of cargo for Nelson but no passengers. Mr Wakefield will contest the seat for Timaru against Mr Turubull. A sharp contest is expected.
