MR BARTON M. H. R.
(Wellington Argus.)
The Duueding Evening Star, which hus taken a great interest iv the late Wellington election has a louder on its result in which it pitches into Mr Pearce, spuuka aneeringly of Mr Hutchison, and now that Mr Barton is returned, is slightly complimentary to him whom it previously abused. But its compliments ari3ed from the tact that it makes certain that Mr Bartou will never be staunch to the Groy side. Our contemporary emongat other things eaya:— "If the Ministerial party imagine, which may b 3 surmise from pamssung in ike Ministerial organ this morning that in Mr George Jglliot Barton they have secured a blind follower or a piiaufc tool, they are laboring under a very grave roiaapprehsnsiou, as all those who are acquainted with the honorable and learned gontiemen very well know. Mr Hutchison would have suited them much better— they have plenty of talent; already ; what is wanted is steady voting and quick response to the crack of the whip. No wonder, when the chance of Mr Bartoa'a election became probable after the nomination, the übiquitous Mr J, G. Brown, electioneering agent, Mr Duncan, and others, did all they could in a personal interview to persuade him to withdraw. He is a very dangerous element in their midst." A good dtal of fuss was here made about Mr Barfon's career in the Oia^o Provincial Council. The Star, whicn ought to know something concerning it, bus n;>fc pleasant; rrtetnoriea thereof. 0 It remarks of Mr B.rton that ha may be valuable to the "State "if ho will only put his shoulder to the wheel anj not follow the course which made him a failure in our Provincial Council — namely, making ill-coDsiJered haraugues upon every coneeivabio subject, and performing what can^oniy be designated as " war dances " in the faea of his political antagonists of the hour. Oue thing may bo taken for granted. MiBarton will nofc support the Government in playing fast and loose with land question. He will scarcely approve of certain administrative Acts, completed or designed, which are likely to be discussed in Parliament, aad certainly will object to ba ' kept up to the collar ' by Mr J. C Brown."
