UPPER MOTUEKA ROAD BOARD.
The Board met on Saturday last. All the members were present. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The correspondence connected with the question of the erectiou of milestones on (ha road to the West Const was read. Resolved that the consideration of the question of erecting milestones on the road f--orn the railway station, Foxbill, fo the West Const ho postponed till nr-xt mooting. A letter from the Public Wcrks Office was read, stating that £1400 would be paid in Wellington to vouchers signed by the chairman certifying | 0 the amount of work done, aud thai; it is on the line of road for which (he above was granted, namely, the road from Nelson to Westport and G-reymouth. The chairman reported on the steps he had taken to enforce the fulfilment of tlie contract of Messrs Newport and Thompson. Resolved that Messrs Newport and Thompson be informed that unless they commence work within seven days the contract will bo given to the next lowest tenderer, and tho extra 9s per chain charged against them. A letter from Mr J. Kerr, complaining of the road on the Big Bash side of D. Kerr's hill having been read, it wos resolved That the Secretary visit tho road complained of and report to the Board at its next meetiug. Resolved, That the Secretary be empowered to let the widening of the remainder of the Spooner's Range road to R.&J .Edgar, at prices in proportiou to cost of parts let and completed, on condition that the unemployed sent up by Mr Greenfield be employed thereon. Resolved, That Mr Drummond be authorised to employ a Man four days on tha road between his sliprails and the Motueka river ; that Mr Phillips bo empowered to have stumps taken out on the road between bis gate and tho Sherry crossing, cost not to exceed £ 5 ; that Mr Symes be instructed to employ W. Fenemore three days in cleariug a track to his house, . Resolved, That Mr A. Adams be informed that tha Board hss no power of itself to close up or dispose of the road leading over the hill into Motueka Valley, aud paasing through Mr King's section ; that if there ever was a '•' right of road " through that section leading down the Stanley Brook Valley, the Board could not and hns not surrendered that right ; that the Board intends to reassert its claim to the road surrendered, and to demand repayment of the £12 as it now seems to have been illegally claimed by, and paid to, the then owner of that section. Resolved, That Mr J. Fenemore be authorised to remove the timber growing on the road between Sections 2 and 98, square 6. Resolved, That notice ba given of the intention of the Board to make a rate, that the Secretary be appointed rate collector, and that next meeting b 9 held March 16th. Reaolved, That tenders ba invitad for widening side-cutting between Motueka Valley and Stanley Brook ; for gravelling 25 chains of road in Tad m or Valley • for forming and gravelling the road between the church and Cook's seotion ; for one mile of forming, Motupiko Valley ; for gravelling Hope Valley j and for widening all tha cuttings on the road between Newport's and the Buller river. Accountg were passed and paid amounting to £222 63.
