The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1878.

At the Police Court this morning, before 11. E. Curtis and G. Gillow, Esqs., J.J.P., one Mrs Hawk, a resident of the Port, was charged with using obscene language in a I public highway on Friday night, and again I this morning. The same Hawk was further charged with having displayed carnivorous propensities last night, when, upon being arrested, she first tried to tear Constable Bradcock's coat, and, failing in that, laid hold of his thumb with her teeth, " biting through the nail and tearing the flesh away." On being asked what she had to say for herself, prisoner pleaded pitcously for pardon, solemnly assuring the Bench that she would never again offend in a like manner if only forgiven this time. The Justices, however, were made of sterner stuff than to be moved by her tears and protestations, and for the first offence sentenced her to a fine of £1 or a week's imprisonment, for the second £? or a fortnight, and for the last, which they characterised as " most disgraceful aud abominuble conduct, " .£lO or two months. As the husband of the prisoner has within the last few days boen complaining to the police of the 'couduct of his wife, it is scarcely likely that ho will pay the fines, so that the Port is likely to be rid for at least seven weeks of one who has proved an intolerable nuisance.
