Divine service was conducted in Christ^ Church yesterday by the Rev. R. Coffey, of St. Mark's Church, Wellington, who has exchanged duties for a few weeks with tha Rev. J. Leighton.
An inquest was held at Wakefield on Saturday afternoon upon the fire by which Mr John Duncan's barn was destroyed ou Saturday the sth inst. The following verdict was returned :—" The jury empanelled to enquire into the origin of the fire at Mr John Duncan's, at Wakefield, consider that although there is no evidence to show that it was caused by sparks from the engine on the railway, they are of opinion from the frequent fires that take place on or near the line, that it may have occurred from that cause, and would respectfully request the Government to take such measures as will lessen the danger to property from sparks from the engines. Henry Cape Williamson was found guilty in Wellington last week of passing a valueless cheque. His Honor sentenced him to twelvsmonths imprisonment with hard labor, remarking that prisoner was nofc like an ignorant man • he had received a liberal education and held a responsible position.
