When fiomipg down Hobsou's Bay the engines had to be stopped for a little while to repair some trifling damage, and while the vessel was laying-to she was run iuto by a brig named Albert th,e Good. The brig carried away the Arawata's rail on both sides forward, and the former iv her turn lost her jibboom, besides sustaining some other damage. On board the Arawata was Major I'earce, for several years Captain of the Wellington Artillery, and who was on his way to Wellington from a trip to the Old CSoHßtry. As that corps was desirous of showing some respect for their old commander, they mustered on Saturday morning and firei a, salute iv honor of his arrival. This was responded to from the Arawata, and one of the sailors, vyho had neglected to wet the sponge before gleaning the cannon out, liiereby leaving some fire jn it, while iv the act of loading the charge wemt oft, blowing away the greater portion of the poor fellow's riglst hand, and sending the ramrod .somewhere into the middle of the town.
