The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1878.
We are compelled to hold over our report of the day's proceedings in the Resident Magistrate's Court until to-morrow. It is greatly to be regretted that the name of a Nelson constituency should be dragged through the mire, but such is the case with the electoral district of Motueka in consequence of the alleged action of its representative in New Plymouth iv connection with the reception of Sir George Grey in that town. We trust that the telegram which we yesterday copied from the Wellington Post is an exaggerated account of what took place, and that Mr Richmond Hursthouse, M.H.R. will be in a position to give a satisfactory explanation of his conduct on his return to Nelson. Uutil he has been afforded an opportunity of giving his version of the affair, we forbear from making any fnrther remarks. In the District Court yesterday in the case of Holmes v. Rutherford and Newtb, which was not concluded when we went to press, the jury found for the defendants on all the issues. Costs £8 9s. Mb Clapcott will deliver his lecture on Insurance, to he followed by popular readings, at the Richmond School-room this evening. On Thursday he will also lecture at Wakefield. The is free, and both lecture and readings are well worth hearing. j At a meeting of the parishioners of Christ I Church, held last night, Mr J. R. Dodson was unanimously elected Churchwarden in the place of Mr Anthony, who has left Nelson. Mr Roberts was elected Vestryman. The question of the desirability of building a Sunday School room was discussed, and it was stated that the land required and the erection of tbe building would be £450. A mobt liberal offer was made by the Rev. J. Leighton, the Incumbent, who undertook to subscribe £10 for every £100 raised by the parishioners for the purpose. Ultimately it was decided to convene a special meeting of the parishioners for Monday evening next, for the purpose of fnrther considering the matter. Mu. Hodder retiring from the firm, T R. Hodder and Co., have decided to relinquish the Trafalgar House business, and to reduce the stocks in their general stores at Richmond and Spring Grove. To effect this they will offer immediately the wbole of their varied stocks at very greatly reduced prices. This sale is exclusively for cash. — [Advt.] The sheet anchor of the debilitated. Ordinary stimulants afford no permanent benefit to persons deficient in natural vigor or weakened by disease In fact the effect produced by unmedicatcd spirits, even when pure is injurious, as they produce an exhausting reaction upon the nervous system.
