[PKKSS AGENCY.] Wellington, Monday. According to a telegram received by the Bishop of Wellington, the wife of the Bishop of Melanesia died at Norfolk Island on the 31st of December. The interruption on the Port Darwiu line is just repaired. The Hon. Mr Larnach is going Home very shortly in connection with floatiug the last new loan. He takes his wife and family with him. It is reported that after the loan negotiations are completed he will succeed Sir Julius Yogel as Agent-General. The Wakatipu brought down nearly two hundred Chinamen, who arrived at Sydney from Hong Kong a fortnight ago. They are engaged to work on the Otago goldflelds by a speculative Chinaman, who is to allow them a percentage of the profits. A supplement to the General Government Gazette notifies that the Consolidated Stock Act comes into operation after the 9th of February. The Governor, Lady Normanby, and suite leave for Auckland in the Hinemoa to-night. It is expected their stay there will be to the beginning of April. A commission was sent from Redwood's stables on Saturday to back Orange Lightning for the Dunedin Cup, and the following wagers have been laid— 2ooo to 60, 1000 to 10, 500 to 10, 500 to 5, 1000 to 20, 300 to 12, 500 to 20, 200 to 80, 200 to 10. In connection with this the Times says that the stewards in coming to ! this decision are in accord with the views of nearly all the Jockey Clubs of New Zealand, considering it a mistake to have a Derby for Christchurch, Dunedin, Auckland, aud Wellington. There is a strong opinion that there should be but one Derby to be run ata Spring meeting at some suitable localitj*, and that each Club in the colony should contribute not less than £50. This, with nominations, forfeits, and acceptances, would make up a handsome stake. Arrived — H.M. gunboat Conflict, from Sydney. She will stay here about ten days and then proceed to Auckland. The Hon W. B. Rhodes M.L.C. died last night, aged 70 years. Messrs Guthrie and Larnach have purchased a frontage in Grey-street for £100 per foot. A large number of Maoris have assembled at Wairarapa to greet Sir George Grey, who has promised to address them on political matters between now and Thursday. A deputation of Wellington citizens waited on the Premier this morning with an address, signed by 800 Wellington citizens, requesting him to address them, and to state the intentions of the Government next session, at his earliest convenience. He promised to do so en Thursday evening next. Dunedin, Monday. The Rev. Charles Clark is drawing immense audiences. Last night he preached in the Knox Church in aid of the Benevolent Institution. Three thousand persons were in the church, and one thousand outside. Tbe collection was over £80. Wilkinson, a member of Johnny Hall's theatrical company, was accidentally shot in the eye by Southern, the comediau, while playing in " Our American Cousin." It is doubtful if Wilkinson will not lose his sight. Christchurch, Monday. Further telephonic trials were made yesterday, when communication was established with Lyttelton, 9 miles distant; Southbridge, 32 miles; Dunedin, 250 miles; and Cromwell, 350. Questions and answers were exchanged with each station ; Cromwell being, strange to say, clearer than Dunedin. Singing aud rapid reading by Mr Muir at Duuediu were clearly heard; every note of a flute played at Cromwell, and a cooey was heard with marvellous distinctness. Auckland, Tuesday. The solicitors of Auckland will meet tomorrow to form a Law Society. The writ for the Parnell election has been i sued returnable ou March 7th. The intelligence of the death of the Pope has caused great sensation here. In the single wicket match between three Australians and eleven Aucklanders, Buckland, who took up the bowling after Lynch, succeeded in taking the three Auatralian wickets for one run. Balclutiia, Tuesday. Flames were discovered below Conrad's saddler's shop at one this morning, and rags saturated with kerosene were found. If the fire had been undiscovered for auother few minutes the whole block must have been destroyed. Taupo, Tuesday. The Government are goiug to enlarge the township.
