[PRKSS AGENCY.] Wellington, Tuesday. An address to the electors is published on behalf of George Elliott Barton, by his son, announcing that his father will contest the seat for Wellington city against Mr Pearce in the interest of Sir George Grey. The City of Sydney left San Francisco for Auckland on -January 21st, contract date, with the London January mail for New Zealand, The Australia arrived at San Erancisco on the 29th January, t'vo days before her due date, with the Few Zealand January mails for London. To-night's Post says it has been arranged that the Hon. Mr Larnach will shortly proceed to England as one of the agents appointed to raise the loan. Before leaving Mr Larnach will retire from the Cabinet and resign his seat in the Assembly. The negotiations connected with raising the loan will be entrusted to Messrs Julyan and Sargent, the Agent-General, and Mr Larnach, as directly representing the colony. It is probable that Mr Larnach on resigning his seat in the Assembly will be called to the Upper House. The following weights are declared by the W.J.C. She left Sydney on the 29th, two days before Arawata, making a long passage, owing to a strong head wind. She brings Graceful, the finest cow in Australia, from the Colac herd, with a number of other pure bred cattle for Auckland breeders. Tijiaru, Wednesday. The R.M. Court was occupied until late last night on an important civil case, the Borough Council t. Cain, manager of the Timaru landing and shipping service. The plaintiffs contended that the boundary of the borough extended to low water mark, and all property within that limit was liable to pay rates. The defendant contended that part of the property in question was built on the railway reserve, and therefore not rateable. The Magistrate ultimately decided that a portion of the property was on the railway reserve, and consequently not liable for rates. The defendant having 3tated that he was willing to pay a reasonable rate on the remainder of the property the case was adjourned for the parties to settle the matter. At the Albury races, McKenzie County, to-day, there was a large number of people, who left by train There were a good number of entries. The weather threatens rain. The Committee of the Timaru Boating Club are authorised to order from Salter, of England, two pair-oared stumped outrigged boats similar to those used in Ohmtchurch.
