The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1878.

( Tiieke was little doing at the Magistrates' Court this morning. Three individuals were charged with being drunk. Two were fined in the usual amount, aud one, having been previously convicted three times within a year, was sentenced under the " Vagrant Act" to one mouth's imprisonment. — Several formal invitations had been issued by Mr Flett, the collector, to rate-owers in the town to present themselves before the Justices for

the purpose of being converted into ratepayers. The invitations, however, were not accepted, the transformation in all the cases but one having been effected outside the Court at the moderate cost in each instance of Gs in addition to the amount originally demanded. The annual meeting of the Directors of the Nelson Savings Bank was held in the Bank building on Friday last, Mr S. Kingdou, the Vice-President, in the chair. Present, Messrs Stanton, Hill, Gully, H. E. and O. Curtis, Scaife, and Pollock. The report showed a very satisfactory state of things, the deposits having amounted to nearly £1600 more than in the previous year, and 96 more accounts having beenjgopened, bringing the total number of depositors up to 732. The usual business was transacted, consisting of receiving and passing the accounts, appointing auditors, &c. The balance sheet and statement of assets and liabilities will be found in our advertising columns. Sir George Grey, in a recent address to the residents in the Wairarapa district, alluded to his famous letter to the editor of the local Standard, and explained that his object in writing it was " to show that all the recommendations made by a Governor, paid by colonists, and sent home to the Secretary of State, should be made public." The Pott says :— " We are very glad to learn that the letter had such an object, though its contents would never have led us to that conclusion." On the same occasion Sir George expressed his opinion that next session the alteration of the representation and changes in the franchise would lead to a dissolution. The anniversary of the settlement of Nelson will be celebrated in the usual manner on Friday next, when there will be sports &c. under the auspices of the Friendly Societies during the day, and a display of fireworks at night. It is officially notified that the day will be observed as a public holiday. Mr Hodder retiring from the firm, T. R. Hodder and Co., have decided to relinquish the Trafalgar House Business, and to reduce the stocks in their general . stores at Richmond and Spring Grove— to effect this they will offer immediately lbs whole of their varied stocks at very greatly reduced prices. This sale is exclusively for cash.— Advt. With Tarquiu's ravishing strides, stealthy but swift, disease advances in the feeble organism. Had the;constitution being fortified by seasonable invigoration the attack might have been warded off. Now, perhaps, medicinal succor may be unavailing. Feeble invalid, be warned in time. Thousands perish who might have been preserved by tonic treatment. Vitalize your enfeebled system and live. Know that there is health, strength and cheerfulness in every bottle of Udolpiio Wolfe's Schieuam Aromatic Schnafps. — Advt.
