DESTRUCTIVE FIRE NEAR AUCKLAND.

Auckland, Friday. A disastrous fire occurred afc Newton last nighfc. It originated in the house of Mr McAlpine, who with his family was rescued wifch difficulty. The fire rapidly extended to the Rising Sun Hotel and other buildings, and there being a high wind afc the time the houses on the other side of the street were much damaged. The following are the insurances :— South British, £2325; Norwich Union, £1320; New Zealand, £770; Standard and Royal, £400 each; National, £700; Imperial, £200; Union, £200. Fourteen premises were wholly or partially destroyed.
