WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
•\ F 'The Board met on Saturday, sth instant, all^tbe members being present. The minutes of last meeting, and ot spe&ial' meeting to sign the rate ' book, Were read and confirmed.
The Overseer then made the following report:— "According to your instructions Mr W. Bell, with the Bo.rd's Surveyor _ and myself, inspected the diversion^ of watercourse in Redwooi's Valley - complained of by Messrs OjCpttor and Schwass. We are fully oonvinced that the frater has been diverted .from ita original coarse by Mr E.r: Sigglekow, and recommend the immediate-opening of tbe old course aad (i hpldjng. him responsible for any damage until suc^, time as the ditch cvi by him be filled and blockage removed. With regard to the other diversion which has caused Dearly the wbole of thai road to be washed away, it is 6ert'B-Ly not safe for traffic. You should at once commence an action Against him, as he takes no . notice whatever of the ordera of the Board. lo< Pigeon Valley the Surveyor and myself examined the watercourses complained of by Messrs Gr. Fairhall and J, Price, and consider that a portion of the ; water coming out of Mr B. Fairhall's iand should cross tbe road through the culvert erected there, and at the. lower culve fc iha blockage should be removed, co that at flood time a portion of tbe water should flow through Mr J. Price's.
„., Resolved, That the Board's solicitor be instructed to, proceed against Mr Siggetkow for damage done to roa I, and that noiice be given to Mr Siggelkow to remove the obstruction at the upper watercourse ; also that the recommendation as regards the watercourse in Pigeon Valley be carriei out
The Overseer also reported ihat the contractors on the Spooner's range road are progressing satisfactorily with the work; also, that, with the exception of Mr Painton, the parties who have been requested to top their hedges at bends in road have dove so. Mr Painton gave his consent that the high hedjje at his corner should be topped by the Board, but haß since withdrawn such couseut.
Resolved — That &i accidents have already occurred at this corner, io consequence oi the view along lho road beiug obstructed by tbe very high heuge,'Mr Paiuton be requested to trim the hedge Bud keep it low, otherwise the Board will proceed to exercise ti) power vested in tbem by Tho Public Works Aci, aud take a portion of the land at that corner us beiug necessary for the widening ot the roid.
Resolved — That of tue tenders received lor advertised works, the lolioaing be accepted: — Garting Gravel to by-road at stoke, I\ Giolio at 2s 6J per yard} do iiom river at App.eby for Swamp road, VV. Neumann at 4* per yard; gravelling road in Ptgeou Vailey towards, Djvedaie, Andre wb and Herwin,' 27s per chain; do, towards Stanley Brook, J. Taylor, ai 24 i; both parties to fi.id gravel. Al>u, uundry tenders as advertiseJ, tor the supply ot horses, carts, and drivers, when required, in the v-iiious suo-aisiricis.
Mr Baigent, M.H R, attended and explained the action inken by bimseif and other members towards procuriug votes for tbe Wairoa Bridge, aud the roads in the outlying partß of tbe district, and urging the desirability of immediate steps being taken towards carrying out these works. Mr B tigent was thanked for his attentiou, aud informed that the delay as regards the work in Pigeoo Valley bas arisen Iroru the necessity oi exploring and surveying for a new line of road, which otner engagements have prevented being stioner clone, but will be attended to as soon as possible. As regards the vote for the Thorpe and Stanley Brook road, ani, offer made by the Government to advance a portion of tbe vote to be expended in employing destitute persons bad ' been withdrawn, on the ground that such persons bad been Blready Engaged by tne Upper Motueka Beard.
A letter was read frem Mr A. J. Richmond, M H,R , suggesting the desirability of the Board at once communicating with tbe Government as to procuring? plans Bnd inviting tenders for the Wairoa Bridge.
Resolved — That tbe thanks of the Board be conveyed to Mr Richmond for his'exertioDS in procuring tbe vote for the Bridge and for tbe sutryestious contained iv his letter of 20. h ult , which tbe Board will take the earliest opportunity of acting od.
