[PBESS AGENCY.] ■ Auckland, Wednesday.' t - The New Zealand insurance 'Company's ■'half-yearly meeting showed that the receipts including balauce fronu last year ; were £150,780; expenditure. £126,103, including all losses to the end of the half-year; balance to credit, profit, and loss, £24,600/ A dm- • deiul of 15 pet- i cent ■ was declared, and a balauce of £9677 carried forward. The .premiums amount to. £83,500; losses by fire, £9286 ; appropriation for losses unpaid, £3 1 ,363. The Chairman said the Company had made steady progress during the year, bni at the same time had had heavy losses. The Directors would ask the shareholders to agree to the appointment of Inspectors, who were at present engaged, in the Southern districts. The Directors had pleasure in declaring the usual dividend. The report was adopted, and the Directors and Auditors re-elected. . It is positively announced that Mr Reader Wood resigns his seat for an extended Tisit to England. Mr F. ,T.- Moss and probably Mr Dargaville will be candidates for the vacancy.' ' • Mr Hooper, Under Secretary, has returned £•340 collected in Auckland towards the Indian Famine Fund, as subscriptions had closed. ■• At the Supreme Court Rolfe and. Four of the Canterbury team are out for . 122 — Godley, 6; Wood, 1 ; Neilson, 28; Ashby, *44. Canterbury is playing admirably. Wellington's fielding is poor. After luuch, 153 runs were made by Canterbury before all were out. Wellington made only 22 in first innings, and were sent in again, playing until time was called with five out for 44 runs. The Canterbury team were" remarkably good in the field tiud ; with the bat. The fielding of Wellington was- very loose. The Canterbury team left in the Ladybird soon after the stumps? were .drawn. It is thought that Tawhiao will not meet the Premier and the Native Minister at Te Kuiti. Christchurh, Wednesday. A mau named Edward Green was killed by an immense fall of earth and shingle while working in a shingle pit in the Cust district. , At a meeting in the Kakaia district, resolutions were carried urging the Ashburton County Council to vote a sum of money to-, wards the construction of a railway from' Sojiith Rakaia to Kakanui. The estimated ■ cosit is £60,000. Should the application fail, ! a joint stock company will probably be formed. — A resolution was also carried in favor of creating a new county out of part of the Ashburton County. ■ : Thursday. At a meeting of the Loan and Investment Company of New" Zealand yesterday, the resolution for winding up the affair was confirmed." Late yesterday afternoon a young mau met with a painful accident at Saltwater Creek. Thursday. Mr Reynolds addressed his constituents last night. After reviewing at length his own ami others action during the past session and things in general he said that haviug been the representative of Dunedin .and Port Chalmers for 25 years he announced with regret his intention of resigning his seat in the House as soon as his constituents should have selected his successor. He might however (he said) be found in another'sphere, as it was not at all uulikely he would write to
the Government asking to be placed in tha Legislative Council. He did not think he would be asking too much or anything unreasonable after his 25 years' «xperience. A resolution expressing approval of hia action during the late session and expressing regret at the loss of his services was carried unanimously. Hokitika, Thursday. The police have brought to town a very large copper still found in the bush at Bealey Gorge, a considerable distance from the road. It is the most valuable and largest still seen on the Coast. Sergeant Malvern and Constable Bealey were in search for this still about a month ago. It came from the Oainaru. district, and additional information reached the Inspector here, who went in search and made the discovery. It 1b reported here that two miners have sold over seven pounds weight of gold obtained in three months from a claim near the Kumara. The Customs returns at this port show a large increase in the trade for 1877 over 1876., The. gold exported increased over £70,000. The imports, exports, and Customs duties have all increased several thousand pounds.
