An arbitration, case has recently taken place in connection with, the late fire on Mr fames' premises in Bridge-street. Mr James was insured for £1100 in the National, Royal, and Victoria, and claimed the full amount on the ground that he had lost that and considerably more, the value of the stock destroyed being stated to be £1400. It was decided to send the case to arbitration, and the result was that £650 was awarded to Mr Jame3. , We desire to state that our information with regard to the assault on the Port road a few evenings ago was supplied to us by Constable Bradcock. The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night, when there were present, the Mayor, Crs Gray, Hooper, Levien, Pickering, and Webb.— Mr George's account of £103 for valuing the gas and waterworks wa3 received and passed.— A letter from the Under Secretary for Defence stated that the service of a Fire Police Corps might be recommended to the Governor, but ■■ that there was no law providing for theirenrolment. — Letters from residents in St. Vincent-street applying for a footpath^ and from inhabitants of the Waimea Road asking for, an extension of the waterworks, were referred to the Public Works Committee — The report of the Public Works Committee recommended that the pathway by Mr Touet'B be made [temporarily passable, . and . that Messrs Newport and Ingharn be paid £IQ for constructing a road to their; residences, the worktobe subject to the 'approval of the City Surveyor.— The report of the City Surveyor on the gasworks showed. that Muring , the month .of December 32 tons d cwt of coal l were carbonised, yielding 380,867 feet of gas'; or 11,756 feet per ton.|— It waa" decided to throw, the "saltwater baths open to the public on Mouday next.— The ! Council, then adjourned. He hopes by the acquisition of Egypt and the occupation of Constantinople to gain such substantial advantages for England as will make him a second Bismarck -popular because successful. — The Russians have now fully determined upon a winter campaign in Roumelia.— The civil administration of Bulgaria is organised. Mr Hoddee retiring from the firm, T. R. Hodder and Co., have decided to relinquish the Trafalgar House Business, and to reduce the stocks in their general stores at Richmond and Spring Grove— to effect this they will offer immediately the whole of their varied stocks at very greatly recuced prices. This sale is exclusively for cash. — Advt. The most delicious dainties are regarded with indifference when the natural sauce piquante, appetite, is wanting.
