UPPER MOTUEKA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was held on the 22nd inst. All the members were present. — The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. A copy of a letter sent by the Secretary to Mr Greenfield, also a reply to the same. — The former was a statement of the action taken by the Board with regard to the employment of the men sent from Nelson to work on the road between Thorpe and Stanley Brook, the latter was a vindication of the Board's action, Mr Greenfield stating that the Board had a perfect right to employ the men by piece work only, also to decide the price to be given for the same, aud that the men were at liberty to better themselves if they could do so. — The Chairman reported having gone through to the Buller with Mr Coleman and the Secretary, and was pleased at the excellent and substantial character of the work done, the entire portion of the Nelson to Westport road within the road district being now open for carts. — The Messrs Newport have been instructed to gravel a few soft places in the Hope Valley which might impede traffic in the meantime, nothing more being required to make the road fairly passable duriug the summer months. — The vote of £1400 for widening from 12 to 15 feet, and metalling will no doubt be at the Board's disposal before the winter sets in, and may be widened and such parta gravelled as by that time are seen to be most in need. — The road in the Motupika Valley for expenditure upon which nothing was left out of the grant, ia at present the worst part of the whole road and should be improved at once. — Resolved, That tenders be invited for improving one mile of road in Motupiko Valley, and for widening part of road to Spooner's Range — Resolved, that the Chairman be authorised to take steps to force the fulfilment of the contract entered into by Messrs Newport and Thompson with the Board.— Resolved, That next meeting be held on January 26th, at 10 a.m. — Accounts were passed and paid amounting to £432 0s Id.
