. , Dunedin, Friday, A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on Messrs iMacaudrew and Larnach for the purpose of urging the construction of the railway north and south of Dunedin, which should be vigorously prosecuted. The District Engineer reported that the works were being pushed forward, aud that the Hue to Christchurch would probably be completed in April. The Ministers stated that attention would be paid to the representations made by the deputation, aud that no effort would be spared to make the lines to Invercargill and Christchurch ready for traffic at as early a date as possible.

Hokitika, Thursday. Two thousand persons were on the racecourse yesterday. Mr Lunn's and Mr cassidv'3 horses from ChriatcliHrcti won all the events. To-day's races were postponed owing to heavy rain.

A large number of miners are in town from the outlying districts, and it is said that about 10,000 ounces of gold have been sold in the district during the past week. The banks are very busy, and the hotels are crowded out.

Charleston, Friday. Dr. Henry addressed his constituents last night in the theatre, which was crowded by miners and voters. He reviewed his action as their representative. The following resolution was unamiously carried:—" That the thanks of this meeting are due to Dr. Henry, and that he has its full confidence." Dr. Henry was entertained at a banpuet in the afternoon. There were forty-two present.

Lawrence, Friday. The floods in the Clutha river continue unprecedentedly high, and last night there was a thunderstorm with heavy rain which is likely to cause a further rise in the river. The damage to property on the low lying bauks is very heavy.
