A funny mistake was recently made by an Italian fisherman, resident in Wellington through his ignorance of our Post Office system. The story, as it comes to us, is as to.lows:— Some time ago, a tradesman in the Wairarapa sued our Italian for a debt, amounting to .£6, and the latter agreed to pay it at the rate of £1 per week, sending the money by Post Office Order, through the Clerk of the Court at Featherston. He went religiously to the Post Office, and took out the oraers for throe siwoessive weeks, Then te had a run o£ bad luck, and the fourth weekhe was unable to pay. On the fifth week, however, he paid £2, and on the sixth the remainder of the money. The fisherman then rested on his oars, and sung a lively barcarole as he spread his net. But, alas for his calculations, it was not long before a judgment warrant was taken out against him, and his horse and cart were seized. Our Italian remonstrated, threatened, and entreated, avernug stoutly that he had paid the money. The clerk at Featherston as stoutly protested that te had not received it, whereupon the worthy descendant of St. Peter exclaimed— "But I have aU the receipts they did give me at the Post Office,"and he produced, with triumphant air, the Post Office Orders 1 The poor man was undar the impression that they were merely receipts for the money, and had heat them In his pocket Of course, his mistake was explained, and the matter rectified, but it cost him 16s, as the judgment warrant had bpen jssued,
