Melbourne, Thursday. The Council has read the Appropriation Bill the first time and the second reading is postponed until Wednesday, but it is certain to be rejected.
A Bill has been introduced for the eradication of the Phylloxera. It provides for the destruction of vines on infected land without compensation.
The weather is still very dry. Sydney, Thursday. Mr Parker has relinquished the task of forming a new Ministry. The House has adjourned until Tuesday.
IN TEH PROVINCIAL. Napier, Friday. The Hinemoa arrived with the Ministers at 2-20 p.m. to-day.
New Plymouth, Thursday. At the criminal sitting of the District Court, Craun, for an indecent assault upon a little girl, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude and three floggings within six months. Cree, for obtaining goods on false pretences, was sentenced to three years • Myers, for larceny, nine months' hard labor. A meeting of welcome was given to the Hurunui immigrants last night. All are being quickly engaged.
Wellington, Thursday. Mr. Thomas reports:— Flour, £15 10s to £15 15s, guaranteed brands; £14 10s, no guarantee; Adelaide, £17 10s to £18. Oats, 3s lid to 4a Id; bran, Is; wheat 4s 3d; hams, 9£d; bacon, 8(J ; cheese, 7d; potatoes, 30s to 40s, old; new, 8s per cwtj pollard, 6s to 10s; maize, 4s 9d to ss; butter, 6d, fresh.
Friday. Instructions have been issued by the Government to withhold for the present all increases of salaries voted this year to members of the Civil Service.
Mr Ballance says there is no foundation for the report of his defection from Sir G. Grey's party.
Kumara, Friday. Over £200 has been subscribed for Christmas sports. There is a splendid programme, iucluding prizes of £60 for wrestling, £85 for racing, £25 for jumping and various events.
Dunedin, Friday. A four-roomed cottage has been destroyed by fire. It was insured in the South British for £200.
Another attempt is being made to revive the interest in the Juvenile Exhibition.
The survey of the Strath-Taieri railway line is being carried out. The work will be found much lighter than was expected.
Timaiic;, Friday. The Supreme Court has all the morning been occupied iu the trial of Bukerty for arson at Waimate. It is not finished yet. In the libel case, Ward v. Ball, the Grand Jury, after several interviews with Judge Johnston, found no bill, which caused great sensation in the Court. Public 'sympathy is apparently much in the defendant's favor.
Christchurcii, Friday. A seaman named John Jones was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, charged with having stabbed another seaman, Thomas Thornton, on board the ship Rakaia, at Lyttelton. Thornton is in a dangerous state.
