CITY COUNCIL.
Ihe fortnightly meeting of the Council l was held last night, when there were present t all the members except Cr. Everett. Telegrams were read from Mr Sharp in reference to the gas and waterworks, referring to the passage of the Bill through the two Houses. Another message stated that he did not expect any opposition to the vote fo [ the Tort extension of the railway. [ Cr. Levien thought that the Council should | place ou record their appreciation of the services rendered hy Mr Sharp in this matter as well as m all others that had been referred to him in connection with the requirements of the city. He therefore moved " 1 hat this Council tender their thanks to [ John Sharp, Esq., M.H.1.., for the several > services rendered by him to this city in his I capacity as a member of tbe Assembly, and for his great zeal and promptitude in bringing about a satisfactory settlement with the General Government in the matter of our gas and waterworks " Several of the Councillors having spoken in high terms of thenergy displayed by Mr Sharp iv the matter, the resolution was carried unanimously. A letter was presented by the Town Clerk who asked leave to withdraw while it was being dismissed. In it he asked that his salary might be raised from £300 to £350, which would even then be smaller than that of many other officers in similar positions in the colony. He alluded to the large amount of additional work imposed upon him iv conception with the gas and waterworks. The Councillors were unanimous in expressing their approbation of the ability and energy shown by Mr Gully, and on the motion of Mr Hooper his application was granted unanimously. The report of the Public Works Committee was then read. It recommended the e*tenr sion of the waterworks mains; that a lamp be placed at the corner of Milford and Bridgestreetsj that the offer of Henry Newport and others for constructing a road to their pro. perty in Vanguard-street should not be accepted; that notice boards be placed at the approaches to the bridges cautioniug persons from riding or driving over them except at a walking place. The report was adopted, and a special meeting will be held next Friday to consider the question of the extension of the waterworks.
Tho City Surveyor's report upon the gasworks showed that during the month of November H tons 2 pwt of coal h*j.d been carbonised, produciug 374,350 feet of gas, of which G_,.50 had beeu lost by leakage, condensation, SvC
The City Surveyor reported that the SaltwateT Baths wouia be roail y tot use by the end of the C mth i aucl ifc was resolved* that they be painted.
His Worship stated that there was reason to beliere that the consumers' gas meters required examination, that at the Nelsou Hotel having registered 8000 feet in October and only 1200 in November. The Council then adjourned.
