Sue shook (he teacher because she punished one of the defendant's children r Timaru, Monday. The continuous drought is seriously felt, and everything is drying up. Yesterday prayers for rain were offered up in the churches. Yesterday afternoon a serious accident occurred to Miss Cornelius, who was priding near Washdyke when her horse fell, throwing her underneath it with great violence. She remained unconscious until early this morning, but is now doing favorably. Jones and Hart report sales of heavy draught horses at £44 to £52; medium, £28 to £30; fat cattle, £11 to £12 10s, equal to 32s 6d per lOOlbs; store cattle, two-year-olds , £5 15s to £6 5s of mixed sexes; in sheep no transaction to report. Hokitika, Monday James Marris alias Smith pleaded guilty to larceny of saddle and bridle and was sentenced by the District Court to eighteen months imprisonment. Annie Spencer, for unlawfully wounding, was sentenced to four months imprisonment. The Hon. J. A. Bonar was presented by the Mayor at a public meeting in the Town Hall with a silver epergne, costing two hundred guineas, from the inhabitants of Westland, in recognition of his long and valuable p.iblic services. Dunedin, Monday. The Morning Herald made its first appearance this morning. Special prayers for rain have been offered at St. Joseph's and the Synagogue. A special meeting of the City Council will be held to-night re water supply. One hundred of Hallenstein's hands have been knocked off, owing to the stoppage of the water supply, and 200 are on half-time. There is great distress through want of water, I and the crops are suffering everywhere. j A telegram received here says that Dr. Somerville leaves Sydney for Auckland by the January mail. The premises of Mr Simpson, baker, Cumberland-street, have been destroyed by fire. Insurances — £270 in South British, and £200 in United Sydney office. The Herald says it has the most reliable authority for stating that Angus, the father of Isabella Angus, has given instructions to stop further proceedings in the case Regina v. Proudfoot. Blenheim, Monday. The following are the nominations for the Marborough Cup: -Mr C. Redwood's Rata, Orange, Lightning and Flirtation; Mr Blower's Doncaster and Septimus ; Mr Bolton's Lara ; Mr M'lvor's Tom Finn ; Mr Stevenson's Strongbow and Mamma ; Mr Smith's Treason and Satellite. Oamaru, Tuesday. The raid against sly grog sellers continues. At the Court to-day a man named Robertson was fiued £40. The Magistrate said he would j make the penalties still higher when the next | case came before the Court.
