The proprietor of the South Canterbury Times has been summoned to. appear before the E.M. Court to answer two charges of libel against Judge Ward. Wheat is still dull ; large stocks on hand; best samples, ss; inferior unsaleable, Oats, prime, 3s 6d; feed barley, 3s; flour, ,£ls; bran and sharps, prime, at last quotations. . OamjlUb, Friday. The weather is very dry, aud unless rain comes soon, large areas of cereal crops will be seriously injured. The grain and breadsfcuffs market is quiet. The quotations are— wheat, 4s lOd to 5s 3d; oats, 2s 9d to 3s 3d; barley, none; flour, £15 to £15 10s; oatmeal, £17; pollard, £5 ss; bran, £3 5s t Auckland, Friday. The Australia has arrived with the English mail, left Auckland on the 26th Sept., aud araived at Honolulu on Oct. Bth. Left Honolulu on the 9fch, and arrived at ' Frisco early on the 17th, 21 days 11 hours from Aucklaud. The mails were transhipped to the company's tug steamer, taken to Oaklands, and transhipped to a special train, which left Oaklands at 11 a.m. ; caught the overland mails arriving at New York in time for the steamer leaving there on the 24th Oct. for Liverpool. The Australia sailed from 'Frisco on Nov. 7th and arrived at Honolulu on the 17th. Left on the IBth,and arrived ac Aucklaud as above, 20 days 22 hours from 'Frisco. Onehonga, Friday. Sailed— Wanaka, for New Plymouth and Nelson, at 2.55 p.m. Passenger for Nelson : Mr P. Adams. Chbistohorch, Saturday. A petition signed by persona representing 276,000 acres of freehold, has forwarded to t Wellington, praying for an extension of the j Northern railway from Canterbury to Ainuri, via Weka Pass. The Canterbury Agricultural Association purpose stating a Colonial " stud book" and draught stock. The subscriptions to the Indian Famine Relief Fund have now closed, the total beiug £5215. Arthur Von Pollnitz, late curator of the Acclimatisation Society was brought up on remand charged with embezzling the funds of the Society and was discharged, the President of the Magistrates holding that the Society had no existence in law for the purpose of prosecution 1 in cases of this kind. Lyttelton, Saturday Sailed, XXX for Nelson. Saturday. Arrived— Crownthorpe, barque, from LonLondon, 110 days out, with a full cargo, consigned to the New Zealand Shippiug Company, and eighteen passengers, all well. Dunedin, Saturday. The Baptists or Portobello performed the baptismal rites of their Church in the Bay of Portobello yesterday, seven males and two females being dipped. The Opera season has closed, and the Company leave for Christchurch on Tuesday. Handicap Hurdle Race : Kildare 1, Banjo 2, Romance 3.— President's Handicap: Chancellor 1, Unknown 2, Cloth of Gold 3. Won with hands down.
