EDUCATION BOARD.
A special meetings of the Education Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Barnicoat, Wastney, Dencker, Malcolm. Campbell, Fairhal!, Shephard, Condell, Leighton, Catley, Jackßon, Rout, Atkinson, and the Bishop of Nelson. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The question of providing either a stationary or a travelling tescher at the Matakitaki was deferred until next meeting. A letter from Mra Robinson was read, referring to the letting of the Clifton Reserve. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mrs Robinson that the Board left her at liberty to make the beef, arrangement she could for letting the same during her own tenure of office. Resolved, That the report of the Works and Finance Committee, deferring the consideration of the^following questions until after the Education Bill has beeD brought into operation, be adopted :— 1 Grant of £100 to Westport Committee for clearing and draining. 2. Grant to Committee 3 addition to Brunnertoa school. Plan of new Girls School iv Toi toi Valley. An application from Mr R. C. Speer for permission to transfer his lease of No. 587, Weatport, to P. Mullins, was read. The consideration of this application was postponed until nest month. Mr PJank's application for an extension of time in building the Girls' School at Westport was acceded to, three months additional being granted. Resolved, on the recommendation of the Inspector, That a subsidy be granted to a school at the Lyell, at present conducted by Mra M'Mahon. Resolved, that the Swo cottages at the Karamea, belonging to the Government, be purchased for £40, and that Mr O'Conor be authoj-iaed to eKpeoJ a sum not exceeding £30 in making them fit for a teachers residence. Resolved, that £4 10a be allowed as the Board's contribution towards making up Queen-street Weatport. Leases in tavor of J. M. Mawhinny, 56 and 64, Black's Point; S. Gunn, 59, Cobden : and R. Fitzmaurice, 32, Black's Point, were signed by four members of the Board, the Board's seal being affixed by the Secretary, Resolved, That this Board cannot separate without placing on record its high estimate of the valuable services rendered to the progress of Education in the Nelson district by the efficient way in which Mr Hodgson has discharged the duties of luspector and Secretary during the last fifteen years The following notices of motion were given : 1. By Mr Dencker— That £15 be allowed to the Upper Moutere Committee to deiray the outlay incurred in providing furniture, and also to supplement the grant for painting Neudorf sbool. 2. By Mr Shephard — That a teacher be appointed for the Karamee, with the understanding that he (or she) act, if necessary, as half-time teacher, giving three days (at each of the two schools to be established on the oppoflite sides of the river. 3. Mr Fairhall— That the salary of the master of the Lower Wakefield Boy's School be raised to £140 per annum, in order to equalise his salary with that of the Richmond Boys' School.
