Mr. Thatcher, agent for Mr. Levy, the great cornet soloist, writes as follows to the Otago Daily Times-.— "Since the papers of this qolony evidently think it incumbent on them to proclaim the fact that my principal, Levy, had to seek the protection of the Insolvency Court of Victoria, you, who publish the report, as well as other papers, cannot in common fairness refuse to give a brief statement of the causes that compelled him to do so. After I left him in Adelaide, one Allison, a theatrical agent, upon the strength of some agreement made in New York, hadiim served with a writ for £500. This Allison had never met Levy, nor done anything for him since his arrival, but had sold his interest for £750 to a Melbourne firm without expending a shilling on his account. I had engaged the Melbourne Town Hall, and incurred several hnndreds of pounds liabilities there and in this oolony, and in the provinces of South Australia. Levy 1 was forced either to give bail for £500 that he would return and answer the case, which wonld entail a loss of £ 1000, or meet the demand. So by the advice 1 of the lawyers he paid down £240, and 1 some £50 law expenses. A celebrated basso who was engaged to appear in Adelaide sent to say he could not come for a week, and Levy very justly told him to keep away altogether. Re claimed £500, and took out the usual writ. Another vocaliafe considered her--1 self insulted by the terms in which her 1 serviaes were dispensed with, and she claimed £1000, having recourse to law, ' of course, to vindicate her reputation. 1 Other people trumped up all sorts of » ridiculuous cases, and Levy's legal ' advisers suggested a dose of whitewash, 1 as good gardeners whitewash the trunks ; of trees threatened by vermin."
