UPPER MOTUEKA ROAD BOARD.

This Board met on Saturday last. All the members were present. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary stated that he had gone over and pegged out the old line oa Pigeon Valley Hill. From the point where the new line commences to the' top of the hill the gradient changes, being first 1 in 14, then 1 in" M3, 1 one in 16, a part is lin 20, and just before reaching tha top it ia 1 in 12. The Secretary also stated that the new crossings, over the Motueka and Mptupiko rivers were finished, thatthe distance by the old route was 69 and by the new 54 chains. Tenders were received for widening and gravelling on road l io Spooner'a Bange, The tender of Edgar Brothers, for £63 2s. (lump sum) was acepted, Tenders were received for Sidecutting on Pigeon Valley Hill. The lowest tenders were accepted. It was resolved in deference to the wish of the great majority of the settlers & the district to make as much of the road as cao be done with the £400 available, and to take the old line. The following are the highest and lowest tenders for the work let, and the lowest tenders for the new and old lines. No. 2 begins six chains from point of separation on each of the routes, and ends at junction of the same, being in length 115 chains by the old, and 77 by the new line. WOBK LET. Contract par £s. d. The correspondence between Mr Greenfield and the Chairman, in reference to the unemployed laborers, was read. Resolved — That the Board do approve of their Chairman's action in the matter. The Secretary's report on road work to be executed by the Nelson men was read. It showed that work had been set off, that the men. commenced to work at once on arrival, that according to the specification of the work aa it is being executed, the £300 will make a good road to tbe boundary of the road district, and that 6a per day was promised until the Board should fix the rate of wages. — That ;tbe Nelson laborers be paid 6s per day; that ditching and breast cutting be let at la per cubic yard; and that bush-felling, stumping, and logging, be let at rates current in the district. Resolved — That T. Griffiths be paid da per day as working overseer and timekeeper. Resolved — That the resolution in reference to Sttfgg's contract, passed at last meeting, be not held as a precedent. Resolved— -That the Secretary be instructed to ascertain the difference in the distances between the proposed deviation. of the road irom the cemetery to the Saddle, above Flowers', and the present route by Gee's, and should the proposed route be a saving of H miles, to invite tenders for the construction of the new line. Resolved — That tenders be invited for levelling and gravelling the road between Coleman's and Quinney's, Motupiko. Resolved — That Mr G. Coleman be paid, on demand, 10s par annum for the use of the present road at ihe Motupiko River crossing. The Secretary was directed to examine the road referred to in a letter from Mr Stanley, and report to next meeting. Mr J. Griffiths resigned his seat, and the Secretary was instructed to give notice to the ratepayers of a meeting to elect a member in bis stead. Resolved — That next meeting be held on Saturday, December 8, at 10 a.m. Accounts were passed and paid, amounting to £267 143 6d.
