Wellington, Tuesday. The Superintendent of the Cable Company notifies that the steamer Duke of Edinburgh was repairing the Singapore and Batavia cable when the line steamer left Banjoewaugie on the 14th. The Duke of Edinburgh may, however, be expected at Port Darwin about the end of the month. The Torres Straits mail steamer reaches Townsville ( first telegraph station) on the 29th. The Government have acceded to the request that December 16th, anniversary day, be proclaimed a public holiday. A fire occurred at the Hutt to-day, in a boot and shoe store belonging to Mr M'Kenzie. No one was on the premises. The stock was insured for £200 in the Liverpool, London and Globe office.

. A fire occured at Palmerston North to-day, at tbe house of Mr J. H. Snelson. The fire was got under before the building was entirely destoyed. Probable loss £2000. Insurances -£400 in the South British, £630 in the Victoria, and heavily in the Liverpool though the exact amouut is not yet known.

Wednesday. After a long sitting the coroner's jury in the Woodville murder case returned a verdict of wilful murder against Harry Thompson, the mate of the deceased.

Two formal protests against the Education Bill were yesterday handed to the Speaker of the Legislative Council to be aent to the Governor, through whom they are to be transmitted to the" Home authorities. The following members protest against the Bill because it fails to pro vide for any recognition of Christian religion, or even of a Supreme Be ; .ng:— Messrs Kenny, Richmond, Peter, and Miller. Another protest is signed by Messrs Hall and Menzies, and objects to the Bill for the same reasons as the others, but gives as an additional ground that the law is not only absolutely wrong, but is opposed to the general wishes of the people of New Zealand.

Dunedin, Tuesday. There is great destruction of retail goods iv the city owing to the want of water for the streets, and the continuous clouds of dust. It is proposed to lift the sea water for the purpose. Lohengrin was magnificently performed last night by the Opera Company. Levy made his debut, and was enthusiastically applauded, and recalled ten times during the evening.

The prospectus of the New Zealand Brush Broom and Fibre Company is issued.

Wednesday. At the fourth annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory the balance sheet showed an available balance of £8706. A dividend of eight per cent -was declared, £4000 carried to the reserve fund, and the balance otherwise dealt with

The Central Agricultural and Pastoral Show commences to-day and promises to be a success. There wili be a public halfholiday to-morrow.

The betting on the St Andrew's Handicap is 2to 1 agst Unknown and Oberon, 4 to 1 agst Cloth of Gold, and 5 to 1 agst Chancellor. For the Spring Handicap 2 to I agst Parthenopaeus, and 4 to 1 agst Chahcellor and Blue Peter.

Chkistchurch:, Tuesday. Arthur John Pollintz, formerly curator of the Acclimatisation Society, was brought up to-day upon several charges of embezzling the funds of the Society. The evidence went to show that prisoner had sold a number of live stock belonging to the Society and had uot accounted for the proceeds, but Mr Joynt, who appeared for the defence, contended the Society had no legal standing. The probabilities are that the prisoner will get off. The Magistrate reserved his decision till to-morrow.

Grktmouth, Tuesday. The salmon ova are now all hatched, the estimated number of live fish beiug frOm forty to forty-five thousand.

Onehiwqa, Tuesday. Sailed -Hawea, for New Plymouth and Nelson, at 2.15 p.m. Passengers for NelsonMr and Mrs Cochrane, Messrs Denster, Coombes, and Spencer.

Napier, Tuesday. The amount collected to date for the Indian Famine Fuud in Hawkes Bay is £1470. There are subscriptions still coming in.

Auckland, Tuesday. The Auckland Steam Packet Company meets to-morrow to consider the propriety of winding up the Company. The tender of Richard White, for £9790, for reclamation between Waterman's T and the new dock, was accepted by the Harbor Board to-day.
