[PRKSS AGENCY.] Wellington, Tuesday. Owing to Mr Larnach's continued indisposition it is understood that his medical advisers have recommended him to abstain from all official duties for some months. In consequence of this advice it is understood that Mr Larnach will resign and that either Mr Montgomery or Mr Ballance will be the new Treasurer, both being spoken of as likely for the office. Mr John Evans Brown it is stated will be appointed Minister for Public Works. In the Legislative Council last night Colonel Whitmore moved formally, aud it was agreed to on a division by a majority of 3, th<it the Council should not insist upon its amendments in the Education Bill. Auckland, Monday. The new abattoirs were opened by the Mayor to-day. The slaughter-house is the property of ihe City, and the fees go to the Corporation funds. The abattoirs sold at fair prices; aud the two slaughter-houses not leased were reserved as public abattoirs. The cost of the buildiDg was £1365 : fencine, £297. Further small contributions to the Indian Famiue Fund are coming in from the Maories and the country districts. Christchuucii, Monday. Yesterday uioruiug the Hey. Father Hennebury, who has been conducting mission services at the Catholic Church, delivered an address on the benefits of total abstiuence. He then called on the congregation to take the pledge from him on the spofc. A pause ensued, aud then :tue Rev. Father said, " Arise!" when about 1500 persons at once stood up, and, with right hand elevated, repeated after him a promise to abstain from intoxicating liquors and to discountenance their use in every possible way. An additional number also made a similar promise at the evening service. A public meeting will be held at Phillipstown, a suburb of Christchurch, to-morrow, to consider the proposed action of the Government with respect to the'land f und. Tuesday. At a meeting of the Jockey Club held yesterday evening it was resolved that the autumn meeting be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20, when about £1000 will be offered in stakes. It was also decided to ask the stewards of the last race meeting to re-open the question of Matthews' disqualification for his riding of Bribery in the Christchurch Plate race, with the view to hearing further evidence". Ktjmara, Tuesday. A fire occurred at midnigt at Koulston and M'llroy's, grocers. The brigade was promptly on the spot, and behaved splendidly. There was a good supply of water The Times office next was for some time in danger, but the fire was confined to the places where it began. Damage,. £1000. Insurances, Standard, £800; Imperial, £400.
