At Magterton the credit system is aaid to nave become "downright intolerable," and a tradesmen's protection society is contemplated. The following singular advertiaemenfc appears in a Yorkshire newspaper :—« Two young gentlemen are desirous of forming the acquaintance of two ladies of means ° age about 22, who will be agreeable to accompany them on short trips on Sundays, paying their own expense*. A strict privacy and honor will be observed by them concerning repliesattention will only be given to those sending bona fide names and addresses. Replies may be sent singly or in couples." An extraordinary American Masonic story is going the rounds of the papers. It appears as the account goes, that a Masonic Lodge' m Indiana was presided over by a master who had an exaggerated notion of discipline One night he met the lodge in called meeting (not a member absent) to instruct them in the work. Teaching them the use of the gavel, he had just called them up with a knock when he leaned too far back fell through to the ground four storeys, and broke his neck. Picked up next morning, he was decently buried, but not a Mason came to the funeral. More strange still, not a Mfwon appeared any more in that village It was inapplicable. Forty women left widows, 220 children left orphans, 84 merchants left in the lurch with unpaid bills. Twenty years after that, somebody went up into the fourth storey, broke open the door, and beheld a lodge— a lodge of skeletons !. Strange but true, they had strictly obeyed the orders of the VV.M, and, waiting for the knock to seat them, had starved to death. Each was standing m an attitude of respectful attention, looking to the east, and had not pitying citizens taken them down, they would have been there still. Such is life among Masons
