[PKESS AGENCr.] Wellington, Monday. The Chairman of the Wallace County Council has telegraphed from Riverton to the Colonial Secretary stating that the mining population at Opepuki owing to the late bad weather could not communicate by boat to obtain provisions, and were in consequence in great distress for want of the commonest necessaries of life. He asked that the Stella might be allowed to take provisions to Opepuki. Colonial Whitinore has telegraphed to Captain Fairehild to do so. Mr George Elliott Barton has withdrawn from the Mayoralty contest, in consequence of being counsel iu several cases in which the Corporation are concerned, and in some of which he would have to appear against himself. Honi Nahe having been appointed a Minister, Mr Grace, junr., has been appointed interpreter, to the Executive, Nahe sitting on the Ministerial benches instead of with the other Native representatives, which necessitates another interpreter. The steamer Gazelle has returned from the Auckland Islands without recovering the gold from the wreck of the General Grant. The search has been abandoned Auckland, Monday. Herny S. Meyers, merchant, has been committed for trial on three charges in connection with his insolvency. The prosecutors stated that another charge would be preferred in the Supreme Court. The defence was reserved. Mr Firth has returned from distributing the salmon. Fifty thousand were successfully deposited in the upper reach of the Wairoa and Kaipara. Mr Henry Brett and Mr Fredk, Larkins (of M' Arthur and Co.) are the only nominations for. Mayor. Ddnedin, Tuesday. Flooded rivers are reported from inland but no serious damage has been done. The University building has been taken over by the Colonial Bank and alterations are being made to transact businesa there in three months. The Times complains of the Colonial Treasurer's tatics in adopting Mayor Atkinson's Financial statement. Timaru, Tuesday. At a meeting of the Harbor Board the Chairman read a telegram from Sir G. Grey nauing Messrs Henderson and Neale, Civil Engineers, as a commision to examine and report upon the plans for the break water. A resolution was passed suggesting that the special meeting of the Board be called when the report of the commision is received.
