Honolulu, and San Francisco with the outwatd mails: ' ' i Gisborne, Friday. A disastrous fire took place this morning,' destroying a ; vast amount of Valuable prop-' efty. It arose first about 11. 30 in,a building ■in course of ejrection at the rear of the Masonic Stables. Everything in the township was as dry, as tipder, owing to the long drought.. The flames caught the Masonic Stables and a small house adjoining.occupied by Mr. Stevenson. A large crowd was soon on the spot, and the stables were saved. In the meantime, sparks blew, over ,Teat aud Co.'sshop, igniting the Masonic Hotel (the finest hotel in Gisborne). This was soon in a mass of flame.s, together with a long range of offices adjoining, and the Standard newspaper office, all of which were speedily burnt to tlie ground.; The . Herald office was in great danger for some' time, also the private residence at the back. Volunteers with buckets of water succeeded in -saving 'the corner. There was a good deal of water from pumos and wells in the vicinity, with, plenty of buckets, axes, and willing volunteers, but a tptal absence of fire extinguishing appliances; The mischief was done in an incredibly, short space of time, and the whole street is now strewed with billiard , tables, hotel furniture, chairs, and every description of valuables. The Mayor has sworn in 25 special constables for the purpose of watching the embers and guarding against a fresh outbreak. Most of the property was insured. The loss is roughly estimated at .£lO,OOO. The buildings destroyed were :—Stevenson's new house, four rooms, Masonic Hotel, Rogau's offices, Native Lands Court offices, Dejls, hairdresser, Siddons, grocer, Schultz's p ivate house, Edward's private house, John D'ck's blacksmith shop: The New Zealand Insurance Company lose 7 £400 on the Standard newspaper office, £300 on private buildings, £200 on Siddons' store, and £1500 on the Masonic Hotel. The stock and furniture; ■. of i the hotel, were a\so insured for an additional sum of £1400. The Masonic Hdiel was also insured in the Victoria Company for £500, in the Standard for .£3oo, and and in the National for £500. The Standard Company's loss is about £2000, South British £800 on a portion of the Masonic Hotel building. ■ Saturday. The total loss by the fire is estimated' afc £15,000. ' Auckland, Friday. A public meeting, convened by the Mayor to! consider the present political situation was held in the Choral Hall to-night. The building was densely packed, over 1000 persona being present. The first resolution: moved by Mr Boyian, seconded by Mr Atkin, aud carried amid enthusiastic demonstrations was as follows:— "That, in the opinion of tb's meeting, it is desirable that he financial position of the colony should be placed before the country by the present Government ; and that if the factious opposition ba continued, the Government should immediately apply for a dissolution." The meetis :still proceeding. \±^ Saturday. At the pnbhc meeting last night after the ficst resolution was carried unanimously; the second resolution was passed that copies he sent to Sir G. Grey and the Auckland City members, Mr Reader Wood and Dr Wallis. A resolution was also carried to the effect that , an address be forwarded to the Goyernor, urging Sir &, Grey's claim to a dissolution, and asserting that it is the only solution for the present evenly balanced state of parties. The meeting concluded with three hearty cheers for Sir G. Grey. i Christchurch, Friday. i The grain market is very dull. Wheat, 4s 6d to 6s; oats,. 3s ; flour, £15 to £16; pptatoes, 20s; butter, 5Jd to 6d; cheese, 5d to 5 |d; hams and bacon, 7dto 8d; mutton, in w,ool, 3d; beef, 27s 6d. ._ . f Ti . ' ' .: Saturday. It has been suggested that a public meeting should be held to consider the political situation, but the Times urges that it should not be done till after the Financial Statement is made, and ifc3 says object should clearly be to judge between the necessity for a dissulution or the continuance of the Grey Ministry. The total subscriptions towards the Indian Famine Fund are £5018. Mr Redwood has purchased Ariel and Longlands from Mr Farmer. Mr Redwood has sold a colt, by Traducer, out of Waitnea, one month old, to Mr Kitchen, of Dunediu, for 500 guineas. Dohedin, Friday. >, John Connell, Inspector of Insurances, has been charged with indecency before a number of school children, and remanded till Tuesday. The defence is that he was drunk at the time. Under the heading, « Policy of the Catholics," the Tablet says : " Party considerations must go down in the presence of the school question. Much as we admire Sir George Grey, we will vote not only against his party, but even against hia Ministry, who yoted against aided schools." Mr Sheehan is strongly denounced. > The Star says that Mr M'Neill, the County Chairman, is likely to oppose Mr Thomson at Clutha The High School trouble is again brewing. ....
