[PSESS AGENCY.] Chkistciiurch, Thursday. The crops are still suffering from want of rain. The late sown wheat on light lands is nearly ruined, but the early wheat generally is still looking well. The potatoes have beeu seriously damaged by frosts. The aunual session of the Grand Lodge of Good Templars will be held at Timaru, commencing on the second Tuesday in December. A steeplechase match came off to-day between Mr. Neilson's blk. g. The Moose and Mr. Brittan's b. g. Royalty; distance two miles, and stakes 100 soya a side. O'Brien rode The Moose, and M'Coy rode Royalty. It was a splendid race for over a mile, when the Moose, which was leading slightly, refused. Royalty kept on in good style, but the Moose soon began to gain on him. At the last jump but two, Royalty fell and got away from his rider. The Moose was then only three lengths astern, and won as he liked. Wellington, Thursday. The Wellington sailed for Pictou, Nelson, and North at 2 p.m. Passengers: Mr and Mrs Thomas, Messrs Empson, Gilmour, Capt. Baillie, and three in the steerage. Dunedin, Friday. The annual meeting of the Diocesan Synod closed last night. One resolution carried was, "That the Synod hopes that every effort will be made by the , clergy and lay members of the church to provide for the religious education of the young." Professional accountants are to examine the system of accounts now used by the City Council, and also the system suggested by the Mayor and report as to their respective merits.
