The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1877.

We are glad to learn that the salmon ova which arrived from California by the last mail steamer are hatching in large numbers, and that the young fish appear to be remarkably healthy and strong. It is exactly four months to-day since his Excellency the Governor expressed the pleasure he felt in once more meeting the Honorable Legislative Councillors and gentleman of the House of Representatives who constitute the Parliament of New Zealand, and at this period of the.session it is found necessary to convene public meetings throughout the colony similar to that'held in the Provincial Hall last night. What are we coming to? s The Chairman of the Upper Motueka Eoad Board notifies that laborers requiring work should apply to him at the Government Buildings at ten o'clock to-morrow morning. Yet another has been added to the long list of fatal accidents that have occurred, on the Kuinara diggings within the last year. These frequent losses of valuable lives surely point to the necessity of periodical inspection of the workings by a properly constituted authority. The resolutions agreed to at last night's meeting were forwarded to Wellington by the Wanaka this afternoon. The wreck of the Queen Bee as she now lies at the Sandspit will be sold by auction by Mr Mabin on Monday next. The monthly inspection of the City and Port Volunteers will take place at the Drill Shed this evening at half-past seven. As this will be the first inspection sines Major Pitt has had command of the district it is hoped that the Volunteers will muster in full force.

A testimonial was recently presented at Foxton to Mr Smallbone, assistant telegraphist, son of Mr Smallbone, of Nelson, on the occasion of his leaving the district for Wellington. The address spoke in high terms of the recipient's courtesy and attention, and expressed the regret of those he was about to leave behind at parting from him.
