The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1877.

We understand that Mr Dodson has consented to become a candidate for the office of Mayor. The only other name mentioned to our knowledge is that of Mr Thomas Harley, Mr Richmond, who was at one time spoken of as a candidate, being unwilling to come forward in opposition to Mr Dodson. Tue usual weekly practice of the Harmonic Society will not be held to-morrow evening, the cause,* we regret to say, being the serious illness of Mr Fell, tbe conductor. The political meeting to be held this evening at the Provincial Hall, will commence at half past seven.

The Gazette of the Bth instant, announces the promotion of Captain Pitt of the City Artillery, to the rank of Major. It is with great regret that we announce, and that the large majority of our readers will learn, that Mr Dick, who for the last twelve years has been Chief Postmaster at Nelson, is about to be removed to Christchurch. While congratulating him upon his promotion we cannot but feel that what is his gain, is to Nelson a loss thai will be verv widely felt. .

A heetino in connection with the British and Foreign Bible Society was held at the Masonic Hall last night, ahd was well attended. The chair was taken by the Right Rev. the Bishop of Nelaon. The report having been read by Mr H. D. Jackson, the Secretary, addresses were delivered by the Rev. Mr Purchon, Wesleyan Minister at Motueka, on the Bible Society in connection with foreign missions ; by the Bishop on the Bible Society and its translations and translators; by the Rev. J. Leighton on Missions in India; and by the Rev. G. A. Whyte on the Woman's Mission in Londoa iu connection with the Society: A collection was made at the close of the meeting, amounting to £6 16s The Queen of the South, news of the wreck of which appeared in our shipping column yesterday, was bound to Port Chalmers and Lyttelton with sugars for those ports, part of the cargo beino* for Messrs Sclanders, Fletcher, and Co., of Christchurch. The Nelson sugar vessel is the barque Emma, consigned jointly to Messrs N. Edwards and Co., and Messrs Sclanders and Co. She is now almost due. The following is from the Past of Monday last :—The raffle for the fine pianoforte presented to the St. Peter's Church Bazaar by Mr Andrew Youug, cadae oif at Messrs. Barraud and Son's shop Lambton Quay, on Saturday afternoon. The result was a tie at 39 between Mrs George Cotterell aud Mr R. Some. ville. On throwing off the tie Mrs G. Cotterell won the piano by 33 to 26, amid general congratulations.
