HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Wellington; Tuesday. The House met at 2*30 this afternoon. In reply to Mr Baigent, Mr Larnach said the Government were making enquiries about the erection of a bridge over the Buller River on the main road from. Nelson to Reefton.
In reply to Mr Gisborne, Mr Sheehan said that in reducing the Constabulary recently the late Ministry had granted a gratuity of four months' pay to the officers, and one month to the men.
The House went into Committee on the Land Bill. On the Canterbury run clauses Mr Sheehan proposed to increase the assessment on sheep from ninepenee to one shilling, and from four to five shillings on cattle, five years. Mr Rolleston objected to these and to reduce the increased tenure from ten to alterations. A long discussion ensued, and on a division the minimum assessment on sheep was retained at ninepenee by 36 to 26.
Wednseday. The whole of the evening's sitting was occupied in Committee on the Land Bill, chiefly over the Canterbury new clauses', which were ultimately passed as recommened by the Waste Lands Committee, Mr Stout's proposal to reduce the extension of teuure from ten years to five years being lost on a division at 36 to 28.
