INTERCOLONIAL.
THE MELBOURNE CUP
The course presented a grand sight, there being present at the lowest estimate 80,000 people, of whom 40,000 travelled by rail. The wet weather prevented as much display of ladies' toilets as is generally the case. The race was a splendid one. Fillibuster, Fisherman and Savanaka made the most of the runniug, Chester keeping well to the front. In fche last half mile Chester disposed of his horses one by one, but Savanaka
made a grand push at the finish and nearly caught Chester, who only won by half a length. Time, 3mins 33£secs, the fastest yet run. The bookmakers lost heavily, but not so much as if Savanaka had won, as she carried a pot of money. The running wa3 very true. The following is the order in which the horses finished:— After Chester was Savanaka, Vagabond, Tom Kirk, Glenormiston, Woodland, Pluto, Amendment. Tha racing generally for the other events was very good. One extraordinarily fast time was made, Talk of the Vale running the mile and a half in the maiden plate in 2mins 42£secs, carrying 9st, which was a better performance than Chester's in the Derby at 2mins 43secs. <
