A meeting in connection with the British and Foreign Bible Society will be held at the Masonic Hall at 7.30 this evening. The attention of members of the 1.0.0. F M.U., Nelson District is called to the advertisement announcing that the Purple Lecture will be held at the Travellers' Rest Lodge Room, Richmond, this evening at half-past seven. A Coruespondeut telegraphs to us this afternoon from Wellington as follows : — " The Government are merely talking to gain time. Major Atkinson and the late members of the Government are willing to give way on many points, if Sij G. Grey alone will withdraw from the other side. It is understood that Sir George alone stands out, and by this means prevents any business being gone on with. The Government will not make any pledges about Separation or the Land Fund, nor will they state how they propose dealing with the finance of the Colouy. A fair compromise can be come to oil both sides if Sir George would concede, lhe opposition to business comes solely from the Government supporters, particularly from Messrs Stout and Rees, and not from the Opposition. Last night again they resisted all attempts to go on with the Land Bill, aud it surmised that their intention is to throw it out altogether." We understand that three resolutions will be proposed at to-morrow night's meeting, thesubstauce of which is as follows:— (1) That in the opinion of this meeting the mii terests both of the colony and this district would be best served by Parliament giving bir G. Grey's Government a fair trial. (2) 1 hat taking into consideration the evenly balanced state of parties in the House, it is desirable that there should be a dissolution. (3) That the Mayor bo requested to forward copies of the foregoing resolutions to the Nelson mehibers. We mentioned about ten days ago that a number of men who were out of work in Nelson had appealed to Mr Greenfield, as representing the Government here, for employment, and that he had placed himself in communication with the Minister for Public Works on the subject. By some mistake the telegram forwarded from here was dated Westport, and hence has arisen the delay which which has taken place. Mr Greenfield, howce u Gr, « aS now heard from fche Minister to the the effect that he is authorised to inform fche Motueka Road Board that if they will employ the destitute men on tie Oriuocoand Stanley Brook Road, £700 wili be placed at their

disposal afc once in anticipation of fche vote proposed to Parliament for that -road, the i men to be under the direction of the Road I Board engineer. j The ordinary general meeting of fche ! shareholders in the Para Para Iron and Coal I Company was held last night when the report and balance sheet for the year were read and adopted, after which an extraordinary meeting was held fco consider fche propriety of wiuding up the Company. A suggestion by Dr Irvine that the Company should sell all their perishable property, but retain the control of their leases, did not meet with support, and a resolution for winding up at once was unanimously agreed to. Messrs Mabin and Scaife were appointed liquidators, their remuneration to be 2.} per cent on the nett amount realised for distribution amongst the shareholders. A vote of thanks to the Chairman (Mr R. Levien) terminated the ! proceedings.
