The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1877.
The Customs receipts at the port of Nelson for the week ending to-day were .£505 2s 6d. The number of passengers who travelled on the railway yesterday was over 1500, the receipts being slightly in excess of £109. The late floods in the Wairau River have done an immense amount of damage in the Gorge in the shape of destrojing the road, the Rainbow and Tarndale runs being now completely cut off from Nelson. At Blenheim the garden of Mr H. Dodson was utterly destroyed by the rush of water, and a brickmaker named Daikee lost 18,000 bricks which were ready for the kiln. Several sheep were swept away. A hardly-contested cricket match was played yesterday between the Wakapuaka and Star Clubs, the latter eventually proving victorious by a dozen runs. The scores were :— Stars, 85 and 80 ; Wakapuaka, 116 and 37. Intending applicants for shares in the Standard Insurance Company are reminded that the list will close at 5 p.m. on Monday. The applications up to the present fjime have been very numerous. A letter to the Mayor is receiving several signatures in town, the purport of it beiug a request that he will cjjll a public meeting in order to give the electors an opportunity of expressing an opinion upon the present political situation. The net proceeds of the recent sale of work in aid of the Congregational Church fund amount, we understand, to about £80. The Secretary of the Indiaa Famine Relief Committee .acknowledges the receipt of the following sums— Received by hon.
