WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
There was a full attendance of members at the usual monthly meeting on Saturday, and after the. confirmation of minutes, the overseer reported as follows:—"The formation of road at Stoke is > nearly finiahed. About -500 yards of metal will be required for the main lines iv this district, which, if it has to oome from the Port, will have to be procured during the summer months. At Spring Grove, lhe amount of £20 voted for Wairoa Gorge road has been expended. Tenders could now bo called for gravelling in Pigeon Valley. Some repairs have been done in Redwood's Valley. The furze should here be ' removed from off the road, as it prevent ditches from being cleared out, and which are silting up and damaging the road." Offers were received from Mr Martin and Mr Jelly man to supply gravel for tbe roads. The Overseer was directed to ascertain the terms and report. After discussion on the advisability of proceeding with several necessary works in various parta of the district, it was resolved that the calling for tenders be deferred till next meeting to avoid incurring fresh liabilities. The surveyor reported having visited the dividing range in Pigeon Valley in order to peg off, as requested by tbe Upper Motueka Board, the level at junction of projected roads, but bad been unable to find any pegs or lines, and bat) so reported to that Board. He also reported baviug just received from the Waste Lands Board the required permission to proceed with the road to JSpooner's Range, and having ascertained the amount of compensation required for the portion going through private property. Resolved — That when the time for appeals against tbe rate, as fixed by the Rating Act, shall have expired, a special meeting be heid to decide suoh appeals; also, that copies of the Rate Book be deposited for inspection at Messrs Hodder & Co.'s, Richmond; Mr Langford's, Spring Grove; The Turf, Stoke; Mr Jervis's, Foxhill; Mr Olaridge's, Waimea West; and Mr J. Win's, Dovedale. A letter was received from Mr James Rose, of Thorpe, claiming, as compeneation for tbe new road to Orinoco lately made through his land, £20 and the old road, in default of which he will close up the road. The Secretary was directed to reply that the read was not laid out by the Board, but by the late Provincial Government, who also invited tenders for the work, but subsequently handed over to the Board the amount voted for making the road, by which they were led to believe that any required consent or compensation had been already arranged for. Mr T. Brown applied by letter to have the roads bounding his iand at Wakefield set out so that he might fence. Tbe Surveyor was directed to do so when at leisure. - Resolved— That notices to clear gorse off road be sent to parties in Redwood's Valley. Mr P. O'Connor applied to have n public road, leading to his land, and whioh is now fenced across, opened. Notices to do so were ordered to be sent. Mr O'Connor also applied for assistance in forming another road, and •was requested to furnish a statement of proposed contributions towards that work. Mr Benfield and Messrs Keen aud Hart appied for_ assistance in improving the roads leading to their properties. It was resolved that a sum not exceed. log £5 be allowed for Mr Beufield's application, and that tbe Overseer examine the other road and report. Mr Leighton applied to have the road bounding the west side of his land ranged all through, as there appeared to be encroachments on it. The Surveyor was directed to do ao and to report. A letter was received from Mr J, Simmonds, expressing regret that the Board's action in reference to his application for a road should necessitate his agaiu writing, aod aurprisa that the Board have not kept faith wilh him after having " unanimously admitted that the road on the margin of -his land having been washed away, be had a just claim on the Board for a permanent road to reach the main road," acd had literally promised to procure him one. fc i Resolved— -That the Board cannot acknowledge having in any way brokau faith with Mr Simmonds, there beiog no record of any promise on their parr to procure him a " permanent road," nor any recollection of having unanimously admitted that he had any just claim on them to do ao, especially ns at the interview to which he refers, Mr Simmonds refused to entertain a proposition made by the Board that he ahould give a road through hia laud down to the river in continuation of ths proposed road through Mr Dron's to make a public road, which, as was thon explained, would hava been the only justification for the Boards incurring any expenditure in that qaarter. Resolved — Tbat tenders for erecting a breakwater at Bellgrove be invited for next meeting. Warrants were aighod for £210 93 Bd.
