The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1877.

The following letter addressed to Mr Curtis M.H.R has been numerously signed in Nel-son:-"Dear Sir— The undersigned being informed that the report of the Committee in reference to the recent Royai Commission relating to the Lunatic Asylum is before the House of Representatives, respectfully request you will lose no opportunity of urging upon the Government the necessity of bringing to justice the persons who have so far conspired to defame the reputation of Dr. Boor as to render auch action most imperatively necessary to his justification." Wa understand that Mr A. J. Richmond has been requested by several of the citizens of Nelson to allow himself to be nominated as Mayor, and that there is a probability of his consenting. We call attention to the lecture, wbich promises to b« of so interesting a character, that is to be delivered at the Provincial Hall to-night by the Rev. G. A. Whvte. There are few who have performed the overland journey from Pekin to St. Petersburg, and the people of. Nelson may congratulate themselves that one of those few is now in Nelson, and is able to give so graphic a description of his travela as is Mr Whyte. We understand that Mr Herbert Roberts, the celebrated billiard player, is about to pay Nelson a visit in the course of a few weeks. In our fourth page will be found a thrilling account of the loss of the Avalanche by some of the survivors from the ill-fated vessel, and from the ship Forest, with which she came in collision and which also foundered. Out of 135 souls on board the two vessels only twelve were saved. The fifty thousand salmon ova which we reported a few days ago were expected by the San Francisco mail steamer, arrived at Auckland in the City of Sydney last Saturday, and were brought down by the Wanaka. The case was opened this morning, and the eggs were found to be in splendid condition, only about two per cent being bad. They have been placed in the ponds, and judging by appearances will commence hatching iv about ten days. A correspondbnt telegraphs the following ifrom Motueka:— "At the Magistrates' Court this morning, in Buchholz v. Batchelor, an action for an assault, in which tha plaintiff received a black eye, defendant was fined one shilling, eacn party to pay their own costs." A crickkt match was played on Saturday afternoon between the College and Spring Grove Clubs when the former were victorious, the scores being:— College, 75 and 28; Spring Grove, 3-t and 24. Notwithstanding the extreme roughness and wetness of the weather ou Saturday night there was a very fair attendance at the Odd-Fellows' HaU on Saturday night, when the men of H.M.S Sappho gave the second of their dramatic entertainments in aid of the Indian Famine Relief Relief Fund. " Wardock Kennilson " and " Sarah's Young Man" were the prices played, aud these, with a capital musical interlude, afforded a couple of hours real enjoyment to those who were present. The Sappho Company are entitled to the thanks of the people of Nelson for affording them two very pleasant evenings, and for having been the means of adding considerably to the Relief Fund now being raised here. An Auckland telegram to tho Post says: — The Hon. Saul Samuel, ex - Postmaster Gcuerat of New South Wales, was married to-day to the eldest daughter of Mr Edward Isaocs, of the firm of E. and 11. Isaacs There was a very brilliant display at the Synagogue. The bride's bress was satin, trimmed with ostrich feathers.
