A CHARITABLE DOCTOR.

For several years past years (says the Sydney Morning Herald's London correspondent) an individual, known as "Dr.* B^rnado, has received large sums of money, amounting to at least aeveral thousand par annum, from the charitable public for (be support of several institutions founded by him in East London. Tueee include two large coffee palaces, a " gospel tent," mission hall, home for destitute boys, and so forth. He also possessed an illustrated paper, aud engaged the exclusive services of a photographer to furnish cartes of children, both male and female, as they appeared before charges preferred agaioet Dr Barnado by Mr Samuel Morley.and Mr John Macgregor, and after entering the " homes." The opinion of Earl Shafcesbury, and other well-known indivi.iule is that the whole affair is a rank imposture. They assert Dc Barnado not ouly receives many thousands annually in escess Oi what lie expends, but, ttmt he publishes no balance sheets, gives no information respecting his espeeuditure, aud keeps everying in the dark as to what becomes of the money, although he admits his receipts for tbe past year to have reached tbe respectable' amount of £23,000= It is also asserted that respectably attired children have been stripped and clad in ra^s on entering the " home," and then photographed with the view of exciting the sympathy of the benevolent. In fact, everything associated with tbe name of Birnado is asserted to partake of tbe character of Ciirnsanu other noblemenaudgenilemen a swindle. On the other hand, Lord have expressed their belief that Dr Barnado is a cruelly persecuted man, and with a view of eliciuug the truth, an official inquiry is now being held. Should the result be unfavorable to Dr Barnado, the consequences will be widely felt, for it will certaiuly teud to cast suspicion on the management of other iuatUutiona, however efficiently conducted, professing similar objects.
