CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Friday night, all the members being present except Crs. Levien and Little. A letter was read from the Auckland Town Clerk, in which it was stated that iu that town there was no Volunteer Fire Police, but that 20 men were engaged by the Corporation at £8 a year, and a shilling an hour when actually employed. A Salvage Corps was also subsidised by the Insurance Companies; Correspondence with the Under Secretary relative to the valuation of the gas works was read. It was proposed by that gentle^ man that Mr George should be appointed solvaluator, to which the Mayor had replied asking whether the Government would pay half the cost of the valuation, and whether it was certain that Mr George would act. To this no definite reply had been received, and it was resolved that on its coming to hand a special meeeting of the Council would be called. In consequence of a letter received from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, complaining that man}' of the fire plugs were below the level of the road, the City Surveyor was instructed to have them uncovered. Letters were received from John Mason, complaining that 8s 9d due him as wages was wrongfully held back; from Mr H. Hounsell, asking that gas and water might be laid on to a house which he intended building at the Port; from the Secretary of the Waimea Road Board, asking the Council to join in the purchase of a stone-breaking machine, the probable cost of which would be £220. These were all referred to tha Public Works Committee. The report of the Public Works Committee was read, and it was resolved that the City Surveyor should see Mr King with reference to certain encroachments on Albert Road. The City Surveyor's report having been read, the Town Clerk laid on the table the audited accounts for the six months ending 30th September last. The Council then adjourned.
