[PRESS AQBNCT.] Wellington, Friday. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon, a motion was carried recommending the Government to erect a new post office in the centre of the town. A motion was tabled for the appointment of a surveyor at the port of Timare (?). Saturday. The third trial of Haggertv for fire raising took place yesterday before a fresh jury and a fresh Judge (the Chief Justice.) The jury were locked up from six till 9 30, when they sent for the Judge, as they still disagreed. They were again locked up. At midnight the Judge sent for them again, when they agreed on a verdict of guilty, counted with a recommendation to mercy, It 'is said the jurymen compromised matters on the condition that there was the recommendation. At ten this morning the Judge sentenced Haggerty to five years' penal servitude, saying it would have been more but for the recommendation of the jury. The following gentlemen were sworn in members of the new Ministry at noon before His Excellency the Governor :•— Sir George Grey (understood to be Premier), J Sheehan (Native Minister), J. Macandrew (Minister of Land), and Mr Larnach (Minister of Public Works). Mr Ballance will be sworn in this afternoon as Colonial Treasurer. It is stated on the best authority that there are £300,000 of extra proviucial liabilities more than had been estimated by the late Government, and which will have to be provided for by the new Treasurer. Colonel Glover, R.E., the managing director of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, is appointed to visit Australia, to endeavour to arrange for a duplication of the present submarine cable communication via Singapore,' if terms can be agreed upon. It is promised to give important privileges to the press generally with largely reduced rates for press messages in an intelligible language. Christck.rch, Friday. The master of the Lunatic Asylum obtained a small printing plant some years ago for the instruction and amusement of the the patients, and has now commenced the publication of a small monthly paper containing Asylum news and other niatter-5 A public meeting was held this afternoon to consider wbat steps should be taken respecting the Indian _Famine Relief Pund. There was a large attendance, and the Mayor occupied the chair. Sir Cracroft Wilson the Dean of Christchurch, Messrs George Gould aud John OHivier were the principal speakers. A large committee wjis appointed to collect subscriptions, and it was resolyed to try to get a special offertory in all the churches throughout the province on Snnday week. Subscription lists were opened, and over £400 was promised in the room. Saturday. Murphy, the money lender, aud Whvte, the man charged with conspiring to defraud the creditors of Hamlin, the storkeeper, huvo been -Oininittcd for. trial. The Lyttelton Harbor Board have resolved to issue debentures of £100 each, bearing 6 per cent interest, for the £100,000 required for the improvement of the harbor. The debentures will be repayable within 30 years. The India Famine Relief. Fund Committee are working energetically. This morning a member took his stand on the footpath in front of the Bank of New Zealand with a table and money box, a subscription list, aud a large plate, asking for contributions. . Oamaru, Friday. Ihe gram market still lacks animation, the only feature worth noting this week being a downward^tendency in oats. Other cereals are firm. Wheat, best miling, 6s to 7s; oats, 3s to 3s 8d; barley, nominal; flour £17 to £17 10s; oatmeal. £17; pollard, £5 ss ; bran, £3 10s— all f.o.b. Lyttelton, Friday. Arrived— Messrs Shaw, Saville, and Co.'s ship Crusader, Captain Davis, from London, 83 days from Gravesend, and 74 from land to 1 Japa.
