London, Oct. 6. A Turkish official despatch reports a great battle at Gumri, Asia Minor, with favorable results to the Turks. A Russian official despatch states that on the 2nd the Russians captured the entrenchments near Kars, on Mukhtar Pasha's left, repulsing large masses of Turks, but subsequently abandoned them owing to want of water. The Russians lost 83 officers and 3200 men. The Turkish loss was enormous. An official despatch from Mukhtar Pasha reports a complete victory on the 2nd, when the Russians attacked the whole line, but were compelled to retire, the Turks pursuing them to Opachai. Russian loss, 5000; Turkish loss unknown. Other accounts say the battle was indecisive. The Czar has resolved to remain with the ' army until the war is ended. There js much sickness among the Russians round Plevna. The Turks are not answering the bombardment. Operations at Shipka Pass, have been stopped by a fog. . Sulieman Pasha has ben appointed Com-mander-in-Chief on the Danube, Mehemet Ali having been recalled. Raouff Pasha commands on the Balkans. The Russian headquarters have been removed to Sistova. Madame Titiens is dead. The enquiry into the Avalanche collision is proceeding. Bank rate, 4 per cent. There have been some heavy withdrawals of gold. The stock market is dull. Colonial bonds half per cent lower. Wheat is dull. Combing wools are firm. Clothing unsteady and depressed. _, Wellington, Oct. 12. The following cablegram has been received from the Agent-General:— London, Oct. G. There have been great changes in the commands of the Turkish and Russiau armies. KoJeatuehas been appointed chief of the R.assian staff, and Todleben directs the siege of Plevna. Mehemet Ali has been recalled, Sulie nan Pasha succeeding to the chief command, and Raouf Pasha commanding at Schipka. No important battle has occurred during the last fortnight, but a prolonged and yet undecided battle is proceeding before Kars. The ltussiaus are carefully preparing for a winter campaign.
