DEATH OF BRIGHAM YOUNG.
Tita death of the Prophet Brigham Young occured after a very short illnesa. Th ; e body lajr in state in the Tabernacle oh September 1, enclosed in a metal coffin, with glass plate through which the face could be viewed. Thirty thousand persons visited the rea.tti_.fi. The Tabernacle was open all night, and extra trains were rua on oil the lines of railway, to give all his follower'- an opportunity of taking their last look at the proph.t. THE BODY looked natural, hia sickn.ss having been of short duration, and having caused little wasting away. The face showed evidence of tbs death struggle, and also of the strong inflamation which set in previous to death. The Tabernacle was draped in in mounriug, and as the body waa strongly -guarded the scene waa very remarkable. The exhibition was brougth to a close ot 11 a.m. on September 2, when the. * FUNERAL OBSEQUIES, began. At this time, the crowd wag ' immense, the proceedings were quite orderly. The body of Brigbaoi Young, inclosed in a large polished rosewood coffiio, raised up upon a large bier, with the head toward fhe west, was placed at the foot of the aisle, immediately in front of the speaker'- stand. All the Apostles except two absent in Knglaad, were present. Very conspicuous were the fotrr surviving brothers of Brigham Yoqng and iv the immediate vicinity of the coffin were his children and Bbar relatives,, notably among whom were . Brigham Young's first wife, Mary Ann Angel, end next to ber. his favorite wife, Amelia. The rest of the . house was apportioned among the different quorums of the Mormon priesthood, t and the general public. Although the largest number of Brigham Young's relatives were dressed in black, still no one wore crape, and bis directions as to mourning were carried out. At 20 minutes past eleven tbe coffin was closed and covered with flowers the great organ and a band of eight stringed instruments playing the Dead March in Saul and Mendelssohn's Funeral March. Prayers were ofiered ap by several of the Apostles, aod eulogies were pronounced on the deceased. Apostle Eras Snow conaluded his paaygeric has follows : — He has passed away beyond the persecution of his enemies ; he needs no other monument than the one he has himself bailt. He wa9 a great leader in the sense we accept the world and yet he was not a leader iD an earthly sense. God waa the leader who worked through him. The speaLer exhorted tbe people to follow the leadership of God. Apostle Cannon read a document . sighed by Brigham just before his death giving most minute directions as So his funeral. He particularly desired that his coffin might be made roomy, and deep enough to allow his body to rest on a soft bed. John Taylor, president of the Twelve, Apostles, drew ai powerful contrast between Joseph Smith's death and that of Brigham Xouag .• " Joseph Smith laid down iiis life among a ruthless mob. He was surrounded by no family, no friends. Brigham Young has gone to sleep peaceably surrounded by his family, hia friends and his near associates." The services were brought io a close at 2 o'clock. THE INTERMENT. The body was borne out of the Tabernacle by Young's employees, while". the organ played the Dead March in Saul. Ten of the Twelve Apostles acted as pall bearers. The procession formed outside the Tabernacle, and the body bf Brigham Young Was carried to his private cemetary, about twenty .rods eaat of the Lions House, a braes band playing all the Way. The ceremonies at the grave consisted simply of music by the brass band and a hymn by the choir, after which the Twelve Apostles and the Mormon brothers present knelt down around the grave and Apostle Charles C. Rich offered up a prayer, after which She vast concourse of people dispersed. The will dealt with property to the extent of about two million dollars, . which Brigham left to be equally divided among his wives and children the mothers of the children to receive their income until they are of age. THE SUCCESSION. Ail manner of reports were circulated, as to who was to b_ Brigbam's successor. Three leaders were spoken of; first , the Twelve Apostles, second, John M. Youug ; third one of the 6ons of Joseph Smith. . on September 19th the Twelve Apostles issued an epistle, cl.aming to have a revelation from God directing them to preside over the Church without electing a new prophet. Apostle Taylor is acknowledged to the President of tbe quorum of the Twelve Apostles. This is considered lo definitely settle the question af the leadership of the Church upon the Apostles exclusively. THE VAULT. In whioh the remains are deposited is a substantial structure built after a plan and instructions leit by Brigham Young. It is so constructed that after it is once closed it will be impossible to remove a eingio stone from ihe Btructure. The whole will be hurd cemented oul side aud k*. '
