[Br Reoter's Submarine Caule.] Bombay, October 2. It is semi-officially stated thafc Russia refuses to entertain peace proposals. Fifty .thousand of the Imperial Guard have occupied Popokoi. A Russian official says General Tergukassoft aefeated Ismail Pasha on the 27 th with great loss. Mukhtar Pasha reports that the Russians have been completey defeated, and have crossed the Kars River. The seizure of arms in Transylvania caused an irruption of four hundred men over the mountaius. Klapka disavows and deprecates the movement. Sulieman Pasha telegraphs that the Russians' position is very critical. The revenue for the quarter for Great j Britaiu is £110,000. , London, October I. The Times reports that the Australian Governments were negotiating for the purchase of the Eastern Extension Company's cables from Singapore. The proposal is declared premature by Mr Michie and Sir Julius Yogel. The Northumberland sailed to-day. October 2. Moriaity, the Bishop of Kerry, is dead. The wool sales conclude to-night, and 295.529 bales have been catalogued, and 20,000 withdrawn. The foreigners took 120,000. There are held over for the next series, 72,000. The sales showed an unusual steadiness throughout in the Home trade. The main support of the market latterly was the foreign buyers, who operated more freely. Fine parcels, realised the highest May and June rates ; medium and faulty qualities were somewhat lower.
