[PKESS AGENCY.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Court was occupied the whole of today with the case of Mary Ann Trueman, for child murder. After a short retirement, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The Judge then sentenced her daughter, Mrs Mudgway, who was found guilty of concealment of birth, to two years' hard labor. Notice is given that James M'Dowell and Joseph Paul, well known drapers, have filed a deed of assignment for the benefit of their creditors. Daniel Cooley, who was employed as a gardener at the Hutt for Mr Nathaniel Valentine, cut his throat nearly severing the head from the body. Thursday. The** Hawea will bring the San Francisco mail via the East Coast. She is to sail on Friday night unless the mail steamer arrives to-day, when she will start immediately. At a meeting of the Cricketers' Association last night, they re-considered their former decision regarding the offer to the Australian cricketers, and the Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Conway, informing him that the Wellington cricketers were willing to offer the Australians half the gross proceeds of the gate, booths, stand, &c. The former offer made w<i3 the nett proceeds only. Westport, Thursday. The schooner Sarah Pile has got safely off with little damage. A man named Daniel Sullivan has been committed to gaol for two months, or to pay a fine of £25, for lying across the rails in front of au approaching engine on the Mount Rochfort hue. He did it for a lark. Otaki, Thursday, A house caught fire last night, and a Maori man and Maori woman were burnt to death. Auckland, Wednesday. Union Insurance shares fell to-day to 12s 6d, sellers. At the City Council to-day, the Mayor was authorised to advertise for subscriptions for the Indian famine. Napier, Wednesday. Four hundred Union Insurance shares sold by auction to-day at Lyndon's, and realised from 16s 6d to IBs. Twenty-five National Insurance shaies fetched, cum - dividend. 355. Christciiukch, Wednesday. The Star this evening says :— " A rumour is afloat to the effect that the new insurance compauy is to be called the Alliauce, and the capital has been fixed at one million sterling. There are hazy reports as to various meetings of the promoters, but there is an indefinable atmosphere of mist about the proceedings which it is absolutely impossible to penetrate." Since the appearance of the above, it is rumored that the cause of delay in issuing the prospectus is the difficulty of getting a suitable directory. At a public auction of Union Insurance shares to-day, 70 were sold at 9s premium, 260 at Bs, and 40 at 8s 6d. Thursday. Mr Driver, of Dunedin, who is at present here, has coucluded the sale of Messrs Rhodes' Seadown estate near Timaru, consisting of 9650 acres freehold, 800 pure bred oattle, and 12,000 loug woolled sheep for £1 15,000, to Messrs Fleming and Iledlej', of Oamaru. In reply to the Agricultural aud Pastoral Association, the Government have made concession both in goods and passenger railway charges. The Acclimatisation Society have passed a resolution for the fishing season to commence commenced this morning. The trial of Karl Kehede for the wilful murder of Thomas Powell was concluded last night. The evidence showed that on July 21st Powell went home with a woman named Lynch, with whom Kehede cohabited, and the latter going home found the two together. He-turned Powell out and locked the door, and went to an hotel to get a drink. On his return he found Powell in the house, and again turned him out. Powell hammered, to get in again, when Kehede rushed out and stabbed him with a turner's tool. Powell died next day, when it was found that the weapon had entered the front of the abdomen, and penetrated nearly to the backbone. Kehede wheu arrested admitted that iv the excitement of the moment he took up the tool aud stabbed Powell, but afterwards tried to make out that he slipped down and Powell fell on to the tool, which the woman Lynch in her evidence corroborated. No one else witnessed the affair, except at a distance. After the absence of one hour the jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder, with a strong recommendation to mercy bn the ground of provocation. Judge Johnson said he concurred in the recommendation, but had no option but to sentence the prisoner to death. The prisoner was very firm throughout. There is a strong opinion that the verdict should only have been manslaughter-. At a trial of local versus Newcastle coal yesterday the result showed the cost for day's working to be— Newcastle, 18a 2d; local coal, ius sd. The trial was equally satisfactory in other respects. Port Chalmers, Wednesday. Arrived.— James Nicol Fleming. She brings 1 1 cabin passengers, 248 immigrants, aud 10UO tons of cargo. The passeugers are well ; one birth and two deaths (infants) occurred during the voyage. The immigrants are healthy and respectable looking, ancl there are no complaints. She had a fine weather passage, which occupied 80 days from port to port. Dunedin, Thursday. The following were the sentences in the Supreme Court :■— James Cheeseman, convicted of manslaughter, one month without hard labor ; Thomas Walker Longuet for embezzlement (five charges) two years; Thomas Jackson charge 4 with maliciously maiming a horse was acquitted. George Proudfoot's trial is fixed for October 15th, before a special jury. Mr Denuiston will prosecute for the Crown.
