Dr. Skae is inspecting the Quarantine Station us a temporary asylum, the present location being wholly unsuitable and dangerous. A proposal has been made to lodge them iv Government House. Dunedin, Monday. The criminal sessions commence next Monday. The Calendar comprises two cases of rape, one of attempted rape, one of embezzlement, one of manslaughter, one of larceny, two of cattle stealing, two of maliciously cutting and wounding, one of attempted suicide, and one of libel. The Under Secretary, in reply to the Chamber of Commerce resolutions re the Railway Bill, says that in some particulars the Government has anticipated the recommendations of the Chamber, and that with the other amendments about to be made iv the Bill as'origiually introduced the Minister of Works hopes it will prove of public advantage. Wellington, Tuesday. The Resident Magistrate has given judgment in a disputed case arising uuder the "Marriage Act, 1858." The plaintiff applied for a marriage license, and Avished to give 14 days' notice which would enable him to obtain the license for ss, being eligible to take out an immediate license. The Registrar demauded a fee of 20s. Plaintiff paid under protest, and sued to recover the remaining 15 s. The Magistrate held that the Registrar was right iv demanding tho 20s fee, as the 5s fee was payable only where the party was an infant, aud his case came uuder the seventh section of the vtarriage Act. Judgment was therefore given for the defendant with costs. Mr Ollivier appeared for Lhe plaintiff, aud Mr Statford on behalf of the Goverument. Christchurch, Tuesday. The notice of allotments of shares in the Union Insurance Company was issued this morning. The allotment appears to have beeu made with a very careful regard to the business position of the applicants. Many clerks and others who hold little or no property, but have applied for a large uuuiber of shares, apparently for speculation purposes, have received no shares at all. A letter was published this morning from the master of tbe Loburn school, emphatically denying the alleged flogging of Catholic children for refusing to read the Protestant Bible. A careful enquiry is to be made into the case.
