I he Herald publishes the following special cablegram, dated tiie loth : — "The Russians made a general assault upon the Turkish position at l J levna on Tuesday, the Czar's fete day. Storming columns attacked the northern and southern faces of the Great Gravitza redoubt, and three divisions attempted to take the Turkish trenches protecting Plevna, whilst General bitobdlotf operated against the redoubts bauriug the eutratice to Plevna by the Sophia road. The stormers everywhere advanced gallantly, but, having uo shelter, they withered away under the deadly rifles of the lurks, and the survivors were compelled to retire. Reinforcements shared the same fate, meeting failure aud disaster everywhere. The Emperor returned to headquarters at Poredin disappointed. During twilight the assault was renewed, and within an hour Gravitza redoubt and three redoubts on the Sophia road were in possession of the Russians. On Wednesday the Turks made six fierce attacks on the Russian left, and in the last they recaptured three redoubts. Reinforcements reached General SkobelloiE too late. Gravitza is still held by the Russians. The carnage on Tuesday and Wednesday was tremendous. Regular siege operations have commenced. A rear attack by Meheaiet Ali and Su i_>man Bey is feared. The Russian Imperial Guard is expected at Plevna in a fortnight."
