The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1877.
Elsewhere will be found a telegram from the Post of Thursday last announcing the total defeat, of the Turks at Plevna. What the Press Agency can have been about that an item of information of such ''importance was not supplied to their constituents it is difficult to understand. We. regret that we are unable to give our readers any further information to-day relative to the passengers by the Avalanche, the Agent-General's second telegram not having yet reached Wellington. The names of Messrs Anthony, G. Hodgson, and H. Edwards have been added to the Committee appointed the other night to make enquiries relative to the formation of a Fire Police and Salvage Corns. Anniversary services in connection with the Sunday Schools will be held at the Congregational Church to-morrow morning and evening. There will be a Church parade of the Town Volunteers to-morrow morning, when they will attend service in Christ Church, where His Lordship the Bishop of Nelson will officiate. At this time of the year one of the " lions "of Nelson— if so ferocious a term can be applied to so peaceful looking au object— is to be found in Mr Bartlett's garden in Washington Valley, in the shape of one of the most beautiful Camellia bushes that ever was seen. Once more it has assumed ita spring costume and with the delicate white blossoms, of which there must be some thousands, and dark green, leaves it forms a picture that will well repay a visit. We are glad to learn that the Nelson Police force, which was re iuced to auch ridiculously small numbers under the O 'Conor regime, has to-day been strengthened by the arrival of two constables by the Taranaki from Wellington. The force now consists of an Inspector, sergeant, detective, and six constables, besides a drill instructor for the Provincial district. A lad named George Hall, 14 years of age, was this afternoon arrested on a charge of stealing money from thetillat Mr Stevenson's bakery. He will be brought before the Magistrates on Monday morning. A notice by the Secretary of the Institute, and a pathetic appeal from the Librarian, which will be found elsewhere, will, it is hoped, have the effect of inducing subscribers to be a little more careful in returning books within a reasonable period. The complaints upon this head are numerous, and the Committee have reason to be much annoyed by the neglect of the subscribers to conform to the rules of the Institution. Several new books, we understand, have been recently received, including "Wallace's Russia," a work that has met with very favorable notice at home. Th_ neat little Lutheran Church, which has just been erected ou the site of the old building, is to be consecrated to-morrow afternoon, when the service will be conducted by the Revs. Heine, Dierks, and Meyers, and a collection will be made in aid of the building fund. The Lutherans of Nelson are to be congratulated upon having secured for themselves so substanial and well-con-structed a building. What everybody says must be true. And what does everybody say? Why, that, as a strengthener of the weak, an invigorant of the organs of digestion and excretion, a solace for the aged and decrepit, as a season medicine, a remedy for uterine, kidney and bladder complaints, a protection against changes of air, water and diet, and an antidote to the consequences of dissipation, late hours and overwork, that Udolpho Wolfj_'s Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps.— Advt.
